lol at you fools listening to this dude about starting a business when he doesn't make any money

Most start up's don't turn a profit at first. The trick is to just stay with it. I've been doing the entrepreneur thing for about 4 years now and it took me a good year and some change to get out the red and into the black. A nikka was on Ramen noodless, cube steaks and sandwiches for a minute before I got the hang of it. But even then when I was struggling I was a lot happier than when I had a regular 9-5. Not knocking the 9-5 route but if you Black and you don't fit into that mold then its really hard for you.

What you bring the table in terms of certs, degrees, experience...etc is important but you also have to look at your surroundings. Take into account what your community has or doesnt have and if you see an area that is underserved or open then you should try to fill that niche. Hustling a lot of times is just being opportunistic and paying attention (keeping ur ear to the streets) to the the shyt that is around you. And don't be afraid to tackle some shyt that you may not have experience or knowledge in. Networking is ket to this shyt and you can always partner up with someone who does have more knowledge of a particular area than you do. And also patience is key. Rome wasn't built in a day and if you go and incorporate a biz or start a new hustle today just stay with it. This shyt takes time.

Very...interesting thread...

Weirdly just in time for how I'm feeling...

A little back ground about myself...

Graduated College w/ a Bachelor's in Business Management & Finished Law School in 2009. I've been practicing Law since. Without saying much about where I work, outside of the trials, I really feel like I'm forcing myself to continue my career as an attorney. I am really good at it & where I'm at I will progress, but it's becoming increasingly hard.

I'm a BIG people person, I excel at public speaking& creativity seems to always be with me. Even in the most mundane situation, I'm thinking outside the box about creating something r making a business out of it. Things of that nature.

I've always dreamed about owning my own business(Something that I think every black man/woman should strive to do by the way) & I'm really starting to feel like the time is now. I once wrote up a business plan for a Web 2.0 Social Networking Site that caters to Attorneys & law students. I have an idea, that is very dear to my heart, about owning a unique food truck among a few App ideas.

I'm caught in this limbo though...what inspired you to just get up and do? What was your first step? And considering my background, what do you suggest?

Also, I dream about blogging on issues from the perspective of a Professional Black man experiencing every day life in a humorous & serious way, actually much like on the Coli.

I feel like being a big people person is one of the greatest traits a small business owner can have. To be able to speak with confidence and authority on a topic or an idea that you have will make a lot of people stand behind your dream and your idea, and even if they don't, they want to introduce you to those that can help you. Being a big people person is probably my best trait to be honest, so we are alike in that way.

I got a ton of clients through speaking engagements and keynotes, and I'm telling you, that is amazing, being as though when I first started, I had no credentials - but someone is always looking for an extra panel member, right?

What inspired me?
A few different things inspired me to start my business. It really was the fact that when I was college, all the people who were "better' than me in our field, used to come back to school and have jobs at McDonalds, or jobs that had nothing to do with our major. Everyday I would be like :gladbron: "Tell me what it's like to be a designer!" and after someone told me their actual job I was like :what:.

Turns out, you had to grind with the internships, and more importantly, the connections. Later, I had a job, but I everyday I felt like sh*t after a while. It was like, I was a waste of life - why was I working at a job, doing one thing I was good at, when I felt I could change the world with my talents that were being wasted away. I saved my money, and jumped out there. And that is the extremely abbreviated version of my story lol.

Your background?
I got a few things from what you said - your a people person, you graduated in law, your pretty good, but you have amazing ideas that you think can change your industry outside of just practicing law. That is a great start, but I would still love to hear more about your background in life. Where you come from. What you like to do for fun. What do you think about daily as you are working. What processes suck at your job? These interior and exterior forces are what band together to help us formulate ideas and start creating action plans to success.

You said you dream about creating a blog on issues from the perspective of a black man - write it now. 2 years before I started my Monday Motivation newsletter, which has like 2000 members already, I used to write my thoughts on my notes section on my Iphone for no reason, almost daily. I knew they were good notes, and I knew I shoudl keep them, but I didnt know how I would use them. Now, I send out a weekly email to members, just inspiring people to start the week of great - personal insights, things I have watched online, things other people past and present have told me - its just a way to connect with people from all walks of life, and spread the motivation that I have on a Monday, to those who may hate their Mondays.

You would be surprised how much business comes from this - and that wasnt even the intention!!

Love to hear more my man...what you type and ask can help tons of people who may never respond to this thread.

THREE-OH-FIVE TILL I DIE
I hear all the time that owners are usually the very last people to get paid.....if at all.

If that's true.................

Let's come up with an idea right here. You procrastinate, you get no $. You start taking action, and things come into place.

Wordpress is easy. Its free. How would you make money off of it? Ads? Selling something? Is the content on your blog going to be interesting or will it be the same stuff I can find on 1000 different websites?

Matter of fact - what does interest you??

Well think of it like this.

I say tehre is a difference between starting a business and doing a side hustle.

I mean, hey, I know people that make drug dealer type money with just a side hustle, no knocking it. You find a way to generate some type of residual income (no MLM lol) and you eat off of that while still going to work. Little to no overhead, the money is sweeet :ohlawd:

Now, some of us idiots have been bitten by the entrepreneurship bug, and I say that lovingly. Running a company that has some type of overhead, and some upfront cost, means you cant take your profit and go buy a new car and some Jordans. Well, technically you can, but how are you gonna grow? If you cooking chicken on a 4 pot stove, you could cook more rice if you bought a 10 pot stove - terrible analogy, but you get it.

But to keep with the bad analogy, if you had a 10 pot stove, you damn sure dont got 10 hands. So, you gotta bring in some part timers to cook with you, and they aint cooking for free. You gotta make sure they are paid. If someone is late on paying their past due, they still gotta get paid outta your pocket if you got it. Whens the last time you went to work and the boss said, sorry bro no paycheck this week, business is a little slow

You eat last but you eat the most, because you eat off of everything. Just be patient.
