This is pretty characteristic of most HBCUs. There is typically static between the HBCU and the locals from the surrounding community.

Remember, there was even a depiction of it in School Daze.

There’s some beef. DC natives think the students are arrogant, stuck up rich kids. Howard students think the natives are broke townies. But at the same time they all still party together at the clubs, the city proudly supports the school, everyone comes to homecoming, and all these cats try to push up on the college girls. It’s interesting to me though because I would imagine if the DC natives should hate anyone right now, it should be all the cacs that are gentifrying the area around Howard. Not the Carlton’s and Hilary’s walking around campus.

Now you know hood nikkas scared of white folks in large groups. But black nikkas, they will shoot your ass in a second

It’s elitism. Many people feel like that Howard University community looks down on the locals (many of Howard kids are from NY & CA and the wealthier part of the DMV).

It’s widely known that the Howard community and the local D.C community don’t get along at all (You see robberies at homecoming) but this is absolutely ridiculous.

There needs to be more security on that campus because those H.U kids are our future lawyers, Politicans, Doctors, Psychologists, Business leaders and government workers.

just because youre black you gotta somehow relate to people you have nothing in common with.

Nah, it’s the last weekend/week before classes start, right?? That’s when you’re gonna get the most potential fukkery because EVERYONE is outside in the nightlife at that point.

I never said it was fine I just highlighted some of the tension and perception that exist between the two. As others have pointed out in this thread that’s how it is.

That ain’t even exclusive to HBCUs. That’s a thing at any school in a town with a decent population. My little ass town has a university of about 12k students (PWI). We used to hate them fools. They hated us coming on campus and taking over the basketball gym runs and they girls. “Oh you local” was the last thing you wanted to hear from a chick who was from Atlanta or Savannah who was 9x outta 10, running from a bad rep
