was "Funny People" a cry for help for Adam Sandler's career?

I know a few friends of mine have said that, I think it's just a testament to Sandler's acting skills when he tries, I'm sure there are some broad themes in common between himself and the character in 'Funny People', but I don't think he's a depressed, miserable person at all.

"Funny People" is my favorite Adam Sandler movie, but I admit it has more to do with it being a Judd Apatow produced/directed/written film & featuring a lot recurring actors from Apatow's films.

I think that was the OP's point. The premise of the movie was just as Sandlers situation is in real life. Old rich nikka who makes bad movies having to reach out to the younger generation to improve his quality again. The movie wouldn't have been shyt with Judd, Rogen, Jonah, and Leslie Mann. Adam Sandler's ass would have casted Peter Dante, Dan Patrick and Rob Schneider.

I wouldn't put Judd and Sandler in two different boxes though. They were roommates in college or in their early 20's right?

I just think Judd knowing him a bit better than we might helped bring out the 'realness' in him, thus a more grounded performance.

After Reign On Me, Water Boy, and Happy Gilmore.....Funny People is definitely up there for me. I miss the old Sandler days.
