Cal the average SS who racked up stats playing everyday and at times becuase of that hurt his team na Jeters better and at the end of his career it will be even more obvious.

Yes, Cal's offense fell off quickly after age 30....even though he was still far from hurting his team.

There is one reason I have Cal ahead of Jeter right now (and this is both subject and likely to change in the next few seasons).

Ripken was ALWAYS an elite defender. Jeter has never been an elite defender. Rather, Jeter has always been a below average defender. If we're talking about hurting a team, Jeter staying at SS was far more egregious than Cal playing hurt or too long.

I'll acknowledge the still relative unreliability of advanced defensive metrics...but even so. Using BR's 'defensive WAR' numbers, Jeter has been worth -8 wins over his career. Ripken was worth +34 wins. Other metrics bear similar results. That's a hell of a gap.

:snoop:

Look, there's an old, persistent rumor that Kevin Costner fukked Cal's wife. There is also a persistent rumor that Derek Jeter fukked everyone's wife.

I support the player over the cuckold.

Ripken was ALWAYS an elite defender.

INCORRECT! He couldn't defend his wife from Kevin Costner.

Jeter has never been an elite defender.

A-Rod came to town with his superior slugging, yet ended up at a new position, dropped in the lineup, scapegoated by the manager and media, while Jeter refused to support his teammate and still emerged unscathed. That's ain't elite defending? :smugdraper:

Being a cuckold who refuses to heal his injuries and his fractured marriage hurts more than stats can measure. Stubbornly chasing a record that belonged to baseball legend Lou Gehrig DA GAWD, a man who lost his streak to a fatal disease, makes Cal Ripken a disgusting human being to boot.

That's a hell of a gap.

Precisely what Kevin Costner thought. :jawalrus:

I lost respect for Griffey when he started wearing his baseball cap backwards.

How can one so freely defile something so sacred as america's pasttime.

Unacceptable. Unacceptable

But what about the intangibles??? Hahahaha but seriously talking about Jeter is less about numbers and more about what he ment to the winning Yankee teams and the clutch play.

Yep. People try to dismiss the intangibles. "It's completely unquantifiable and essentially based on biased predisposition to want to see greatness in someone you like." Well, yeah, that's the fukking point. Derek Sanderson Jeter has it. I can post outrageous quotes and made-up numbers and people won't bother to doublecheck them, because, you know, what is there we won't believe about a man with that pure a smile, that genuine a sense of humility, that inimitable a fist pump?

:wow:
