i just watched this excellent documentary on the magic/larry bird rivalry. it was really good and i liked both guys and felt i understood them better. i also like that larry was never a part of that great white hope bs media was no doubt doing.

but it seemed to me, that the show was subliminally saying Bird was better. when i look at the facts. Magic beat Bird in the NCAA finals, won an NBA title before him, always led Bird in NBA titles won. I think the closest Bird came was a 3-3 tie, but then Magic picked up 2 more.

yet the way the talking heads on the show was, it was little things that undermined MAgic.

for example, they really played up the first Boston/Lakers final that Larry Won and they made it seem like magic choked.

they then glossed over the 2 finals the Lakers beat the Celtics. and they implied that the racial controversy distracted Bird in the final meeting. they also said he had back problems, which he did, but which happened to coincide with when Magic started whooping him. almost like they saying when Bird was at his best with no injuries, he was better.

then this white woman talkin head had the nerve to say, that Bird passed the torch to Magic as Bird run was comming to an end. how the fx do you pass a torch to a cat that is whooping you and more accomplished?

or am i racially paranoid.

i blame Bird for none of this, he seems like a no nonssense unpretentious dude. but damn, if i was there in the 80's, these caac narratives would have drove me crazy.

Magic won more chips because of better teams. But Bird was seen as a more complete/better player, especially from 84-86. In the mid 80's many were saying Bird was the greatest ever. When the Lakers won in 87 and 88, that's when Magic started getting his props, and people were saying he may be the greatest. Maybe Magic wasn't seen as being Bird's equal those early years because he played with Kareem? Even though as a Rookie Magic played that game 7 at center and had a huge game. You wanna talk about another underrated player on the all time great list, Kareem is that guy.

If someone were to say Magic was better I won't argue against it. But if someone else says Bird was better I wouldn't argue against that either. To me they are pretty much even as individual players. Both played different positions and had different roles, but both could do everything on the court. If anything both guys are underrated by the younger generation (guys born in the late 80's and up)

I remember hearing back in the day my pops and brothers among many others calling Magic the best to ever do it so I don't think underrated is the right term here. But the media probably hyped Bird up more because of his skin color.

Magic didn't become the undisputed best player on his team until 87 when kareem turned it over to him and they promptly won 2 straight ships and 3 straight finals appearances.

Bird was the undisputed best player from day 1, so you could understand why people would say bird was better.

Magic's ability to play all 5 position is blown way out into space. He jumped center for 1 game of the finals, that doesn't mean he could play center.

Magic played PG primarily, and when he came back in 96 played PF.

he jumped center, you acting like he guarded daryl dawkins (the sixers C) at the time all game. He didn't. You think he could've guarded Moses Malone in 83 if kareem got hurt and he had to "jump" c the next game.
