Next to Scottie, I think Pau was one of the best #2's ever.

He filled in all of the gaps Kobe had and fit perfectly into the triangle.

In a vacuum, he was perfect for the Lakers and that's all that really matters.

Pau Gasol was a good player that Kobe made into a great player. Before he joined Kobe he was known as a soft Euro who could easily be punked. He joins Kobe and becomes a champion and is considered a Hall of Famer.

I personally think Kobe with Amare (before his knee injuries) would have been a better duo. Kobe and Bosh would be as good as the Kobe/Pau duo. And we don't even need to discuss how good a Kobe/ KG duo would've been. That would have destroyed the league.

Pau Gasol wasn't better than Bosh at any point besides around Bosh's first two seasons. Stop it fam. And he most definitely was not better than Amare.

Pau was probably better than injured Duncan in 09 and 10 though. But during that span a lot of guys were better than Pau:

Kobe, Bron, Pierce, Garnett, Wade, Dirk, Amare, Nash, Bosh, Dwight, Joe Johnson, Durant, Melo, Chris Paul, D. Will, Rose, Brandon Roy. And then Duncan and Aldridge were arguable.

Aldridge was not better than Pau during 08-10

Before Pau joined Kobe he was in that range. He was a fringe all-star who put up decent numbers like David Lee and Danny Granger. Remember Pau never made an All-NBA team before he joined Kobe. After he joins Kobe he starts making the All-NBA team and his profile in the league goes up.

Think of it like a reverse LeBron. Stars joins LeBron and see their status diminish. Players join Kobe and see their status rise. Pau Gasol went from fringe all-star to being an All-NBA player after he joined Kobe. Guys like Chris Bosh and Kevin Love went from All-NBA players before they joined LeBron to becoming fringe all-stars alongside LeBron.
