It was a waste of money. It was a purchase made to go in a direction they never needed to pivot to and Bungie was in decline at the time anyway.

At this point they need to redirect Bungie away from live service games and more to what Sony does best.

Games that aren't live services and have a focus on telling a story. If they have multiplayer it's just a normal mode and not the entire focus of the game.

Otherwise, D2 is still running with good numbers. They need to make sure Marathon gets out of hell with the bad dev environment and art theft.

the post expansion bump from this latest installment - after the 'finale' last year - was the worst in its history. the game does not introduce or retain new fans and actively alienates/discourages legacy players from returning too.

unless there's a massive high quality overhaul in the next 6 months (which bungie doesn't have the resources to do since they're split between destiny and marathon effectively), they'll officially be in the MMO death spiral. the player numbers are even more distorted considering d2 had to go free to play too.... sony bought a lemon

I dunno, I think those are good numbers for D2 at its age. Though you can argue it should be higher, I wouldn't know enough as I never got into Destiny unfortunately as I think the new player experience is atrocious. I think it does an extremely poor retention job for new entrants, but there's a sizable enough population that keeps returning at least on Steam.

But, circling back, I don't think it is right to tell until they release something new, but Marathon being in plagiarism hell lets you know that it probably is a bad deal on top of poor oversight. Of course Marathon being good would fix that, but it isn't released yet so being in the now the deal isn't looking too good at the moment.

marathon was cooked even without the plagiarism. that beta had some outrageous shyt like players almost never playing a second match whereas arc raiders trending upwards in retention every single day at the same time

both games being in trouble wouldn't be a big deal on their own. the problem is that bungie is bloated far beyond anything reasonable

All their talent been left and didn't they try to sabotage Helldivers too? They sabotage Last of Us Online and I think that was a terrible decision
