Was the car scene really like the old Fast & Furious movies? Did ya'll go to them type of meetups?

Used to shoot car show coverage for HIN, DUB Magazine Show (met Vida Guerra), and Extreme AutoFest (on the west coast). The major shows was where it was all at. Photographer friend of mine used to hit Nopi back in the day.

Coincidentally, I had a Nissan Maxima that was kitted out like the first movie. In Philly, they used to have 2 places in the early-mid 2000s where they raced cars; Essington Ave by the airport and Roosevelt Boulevard up northeast by Red Lion Road. I used to go to both, but I never raced though. My car looked fast, but wasn't fast.

A couple of times I went out, there would legit be a couple hundred people out there, especially Essington Ave because there really wasn't much pedestrian traffic because it was mostly junkyard out that way and it was roughly a mile long, so perfect distance. The police believe it or not really wouldn't fukk with it unless it got too crazy; like the donuts and speeding stretched beyond Essington Ave. But when the police DID come... that shyt was pandemonium. 2-3 cop cars and 100 ricers flying down the street only to get stuck in traffic not too far away.

The culture died down by 2010, folks got too reckless. I actually had a friend in high school who ended up going to trial because he was racing someone and the other person hit and killed someone.

It was fun, but it wasn't like the movies. They made shyt look sexy in the movies. Real life, it's just a bunch of nerds with cars. Unless you're Uber into cars, you didn't miss shyt.

Went to a couple

It definitely wasn’t as flashy as it was portrayed on TV. Sometimes it was cool though. Never been to a big event

I remember driving past meetups in the early 2000s in San Diego. Racing was so common out here and got so dangerous for other drivers, that the city made a race track in what used to be Qualcomm Stadium’s parking lot. If I remember correctly, it used to be on Thursday nights.

Also waaaaay back in the day, when I was a kid in the 90s, drug dealers and other people with money would drag race expensive modified cars on Sundays down a long residential street close to our house. I went one time to see what the hype was about and after standing that close (basically on the sidewalk) to cars moving that fast, once, I decided that life wasn’t for me.

Went to a few in the bay back in the early 2000s. The ones I went to had no beef. Everyone was just into the cars and everyone high off them grapes.

That scene in the first F&F when the cops came through was accurate as fukk. When the rollers rolled through, everyone just gettin the fukk outta there from all directions. Rollers didn’t know what to do.

Ended up at Dennys after we shook them.

Good times!
