I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. He wasn't a saint. Just looking at his behavior after prison, I think there's a chance he tried cocaine or something similar. I mean he got skinnier as time went on, did more work with less and less sleep along with an increase in paranoia and aggression. And just look at the huge volume of material he left behind in the short span of time he was on DR... You would be naive to deny the possibility, especially considering he took ecstasy while in Italy.

I wouldn't say he got skinnier . . it looks like he was building much more muscle mass as shown in videos from July on

ecstasy would be entirely different of a drug/culture to partake in - but if he had any serotonin issues such an experience could be what led to the more darker material we see him write after that experience
