Not too sure about that. No Best Picture nominee has won without a best director nomination since Driving Miss Daisy. And of those that have been nominated, only two have won Best Picture without winning Best Director. Best Picture and Best Director almost always go hand in hand. That's why it's such a shock that Affleck and Bigelow weren't nominated. It almost certainly removes Argo and Zero Dark Thirty from Best Picture contention.

That movie was good but not best picture good.

I'm not sure what to make of the nominations yet, because some of it is so odd. I think the voting was influenced by the fact that for the first time in a long time, the nominations went in before the Director's Guild Nominations. They usually mirror each other.

Funny this thread doesn't mention the biggest upset, The Intouchables didn't get the nom for best foreign language films. Bookmakers had it and Amour as fav. and didn't even get a nom,

like MIAlian said if the film didn't get the best director nod then it is not going to win best picture. It could surprise you but i doubt it. Also this is the Academy trying to boost there ratings like when they expanded the best picture category. The only thing i can see Django possibly winning is the best og screenplay.
Intouchables didn't get love from critics like that though.
I thought the biggest upset was that Bigelow or Affleck didn't get nominated.
