Was Punk really an underdog like that though or is that just a good story to tell?

Punk did not pay a lot of the dues on the mainstage that a lot of the other cats that became world champs did before him. Maybe my memory is off, but wasn't the longest time dude went without a belt from his debut to the ECW title win? He's always been in something, maybe not the top of the card like the DVD brought out, but I don't remember Punk ever sitting in midcard hell for too long especially since as some tell it, half the company was supposed to be against him.

I don't think Hayes himself is saying it cause I'm sure he ain't that conventional, he's saying Vince's image of the top star isn't a CM Punk... just like it wasn't a Stone Cold. And judging by the pushes of Cena (and to a lesser extent, Orton) in recent years, it's probably true. I doubt Vince ever understood (or even understands now) the point of the taped wrists and the X's and all that shyt... But normally, the ones who didn't "fit the image" were usually the ones who became the top stars anyway.

Yeah, I always think that it's one of the reasons why he comes across as a really cranky individual. Listened to a few of the podcasts he did with the homie Colt Cabana and dude just seems moody as fukk.

Stressful-ass job with a grueling, tenuous work-schedule. On the road all the time...never drinking, doing drugs, or taking painkillers (which seems kind of hard to believe but I imagine that he goes through a lot of ice). The big thing to me is that I don't think straight-edge cats use caffeine. If so...
