We all know Ken Griffey Jr has the GOAT swing, but where does Gary Sheffield rank?

Sheff with the bat flip and hop at the end :wow:

Mo Vaughn was one of my favorites as well. Would hit some moon shots from that crouched stance of his.

That’s the sad thing.

Black baseball stars would be easily getting $250M guaranteed contracts like nothing in this current era of baseball.

Prime Griffey would have probably gotten a $500M contract in this era! :wow:

Gary Sheffield is an interesting HOF case.

In the most recent HOF voting, Sheffield got 40.6% of the vote. He needs 75% to get in.

The guys ahead of him on the ballot are:
Scott Rolen (63.2%)
Todd Helton (52.0%)
Billy Wagner (51%)
Andruw Jones (41.4%)

Next years ballot newcomers don’t really have any big names. Maybe Carlos Beltran is the only one to make any noise.

Perhaps within the context of his era Sheffield never stood out a ton. But the consistency with which he hit over his entire career is remarkable.

.292 batting average
.393 OBP
.514 SLG

509 HR
2,689 RBI
1,636 Runs
1,475 Walks (21st all time, ahead of Willie Mays)

Never struck out 100 times in a season. And that’s not super important but for a slugger like Gary it is quite impressive.

The hole in his game is that he was a poor defender, accumulating a -27.7 defensive WAR value. But if this guy was a DH he’d have been one of the best DH of all time.

Now I wouldn’t argue that he should be a 1st ballot HOFer. And given that he’s on his 9th year on the ballot, no one else believes that. But I think he deserves enshrinement.

There will be some PEDs argument against him. I believe he tested positive if my memory serves. But I don’t give that much weight anymore.

Also, is there a way to calculate how many foul HRs a player had? I swear Gary pulled more home runs foul than anyone I’ve ever seen. That guy should have hit 600
