We always talk about NYC in the 90s but what was Newark like?

NY in the 90s wasn't the Disney version you see now. NY was a big melting pot and alot more grimey in the major boroughs like bx and Brooklyn. You saw more black people in NY.

Newark was a different animal 90s. Newark was majority black plus heavily into the Muslim religion. It's parts of Newark I wouldn't go. If you wasn't from Newark and from another part of jersey or NY you was getting your pockets turned inside out or a gun to your temple. You saw alot of stolen cars zooming down the street or doing donuts in front of cops daring them to chase em. Mad carjackings, ever car had a Club on the wheel

I remember my aunts and uncles on my mom's side used to live in Newark back then and we'd visiting in the early to mid 90s.

Gunshots in broad daylight.
Crackheads washing windows when you pulled off I-78
House music cookouts in the summer where the crowds were like 99% black
.
True. I'm glad I'm not the only one who said this. Despite the development of downtown for the cacs Newark is still grimey. Hence the reason cacs get out of Newark by 5:30pm. I almost became a statistic on Bergen and Lehigh

The crackheads are still over that way from the Riviera hotel on down. Still grimey on Bergen, South Orange Ave all the way up.
