Warner Music Group signed a deal with YouTube and then complained about it. Here’s is YouTube's response

Cohen says he was surprised to hear Warner CEO Steve Cooper complain about the deal. He says he thinks Warner, and the rest of the music business, want YouTube to succeed at building a subscription music service that will rival Spotify and Apple Music.

And he says the Warner deal will help YouTube sell that service globally — at least in countries where people can afford to pay for music. Those that don’t will generate money via advertising.

The idea is to grow the global music industry pie. Or, as Cohen puts it, to “bring more cake to the party.”

Peter Kafka: Normally when someone announces a deal, they say they’re happy they have a deal, and that’s about it. This is the first time I’ve seen someone say “we have a deal and don’t really like it.” Did Warner tell you they were going to put this memo out?

Lyor Cohen: Not at all.

What was your reaction when you saw it?

I was surprised, because it’s not been the context or the tenor of the negotiations. I’ve been in the bunker with them, and I’ve been really impressed with how Steve and his team have been thinking about it. This deal is centered around their vision of helping us build a subscription business. And them encouraging us building the advertising business.

So this deal enables us to continue growing our subscription business around the world. And ultimately, the key to the industry — to them, to artists — is if we can identify those consumers that are most likely to be shepherded to a higher [average revenue per user], that would be great

But when you’re saying this deal allows you to have a subscription business — you already have a subscription business. Is there something else?

The expansion around the world. We need the rights in order to continue expanding around the world. :win:

So you can sell this to someone in India or some territory you haven’t been selling it in.

Yeah. I would think India would primarily be an advertising country before it turns into a subscription country. You know, there are countries that are struggling to feed, house and shelter their citizens. So I doubt that they would be interested in a $120 yearly subscription.
But they may pay with their eyeballs.:picard:

Ok i just reread the article....

And im realizing that hell I'm already 119.88 a year for Netflix...

Which is like 9.99 a month

So I guess Lyor is like what's the fukking difference considering thier both arguably the predominant content providers on the planet right now

But my issue is unlike NETFLIX...thier isn't a good sense of quality control on YouTube ...I don't wanna pay for a service that feeds me endless streams of underachieving rappers and singers and horrible "film makers" and actors

I'm willing to pay for content if it's GOOD..

but on the other hand I'm already paying for enough shyt .. i.e Netflix..Hulu...Amazon prime :snoop:

You would think YouTube would be content with the advertising money

But it's becoming more obvious Lyor is letting the Major Labels have thier way again which is bad for consumers and independent artists

And so are other people. People only pay for Netflix because it has really great content (specifically their Netflix originals).
Amazon has 2 day shipping, amazon original tv shows , music streaming, cloud storage.... goes on n on really.
But if YouTube doesn't offer anything tangible then no one will pay for it. I say let them sink their own ship.

Musicians and artists gotta evolve with the game if they wanna remain independent and keep their bread. That's it.

What can youtube give you for $10 that one of these already $10 streaming services can't though? Videos aren't a make or break an artist anymore and there's still other free video sites that people can use. If you want to see a video from an artist you don't need youtube,it's just convenient. They're way too late to the party to ask people for money. They'd be better just upping the ads on the already free content and diversifying the ads instead of deleting accounts because the don't match up with certain advertisers targeted demographic

That's always the tag line but that's never the case. The indies never see any of that money. You got superstars getting one third of a penny for a play so indie artists ain't living off that so they definitely can't afford to pay to play. Which is why they always just migrate to whatever is still free.

They're just lining their pockets because they can't figure out how to get advertising correct

They offer a tangible service... we just got it for free for like 10-15 years. Its the common VC-funded startup issue you see all over. Hard to monetize or charge people for things they have used for free for a decade. The services they are trying to add for $10/month are just not compelling. Music especially bc we already either get that for free or pay for it elsewhere.
