How so ?

They both debuted in 1995...

I think playstation was out in 94 in japan too and people were waiting for it to come over here

Saturn came out first from what I remember and then playstation A few months after.
But thats not what he said

he said it was dead before playstation GOT POPULAR.

Playstation 1 got popular as quality titles came out. The first wave of titles (Large Gem Cases) were reviewed well but sparsely popular Ridge Racer, Ace Combat, and Battle Arena Toshinden were arguably its only hits. Saturn and Playstation were arguably equally popular then, and people were still buying SNES and Genesis games at that.

The second wave of titles (large cardboard/shiny cases) were very well reviewed and recieved...like game day 96, Resident evil, tekken 2...and started to really sell units. Playstation got a movement then. The third wave (CD cases) sold like crack and by the time FFVII, Tekken 3, MGS, came out, And Playstation was firmly #1, saturn was long gone.

wow I don't remember this backstory, tell me more.

They announced AT E3 that the console was ON SALE TODAY???

I think the Saturn was suppose to come out in Sep a few days before the PS but at the May E3 they shocked everyone and said the system was out right now. This was the days before the internet so they were able to surprise everyone with that(now you can't have apple testing products with specs leaking lol) SOA took major losses on the CD and 32X and they saw Japan eating off the Saturn( Virtua Fighter was huge over there and a console seller) So they basically wanted that shyt out as soon as possible

I know EA was like fukk Sega for life after that just like how they are now with Nintendo. (btw why did EA and Nintendo fallout?)
It all stemmed over the partnership that Nintendo/EA were creating to form an online system; however, EA wanted Origin as the online structure and Nintendo didn't want any part of it (to avoid alienating 3rd party companies.) That latter was the rumor at the time, and in hindsight now looks to be true.

Yeah nobody was ready.

Gamers were caught off guard with an expensive console that looked cool.

Publishers and Retailers had to scramble out of nowhere.

It was a situation in where not even sega benefited. Those who followed the industry back then viewed it as a desperation move to beat Sony to the market.

On this day in 1995, during the first ever E3, Sega CEO Tom Kalinske made the surprise announcement that its new console, the Sega Saturn, was already on store shelves.

Sega had previously announced that the console would launch in the United States on September 2, prompting Sony -- with its PlayStation -- to announce a competitive September 9 release at a lower price.

wow an amazing backfire.

they actually DID learn their lesson with Dreamcast though, with the 9/9/99 date being etched in stone for a long time, and building to a major release day

As I remember it, Playstation was a slow seller in America due to the price for the first year.

Naw. It was 300 and basically outsold the 4 month head start Saturn at its launch. I think it caught on huge the next year though when games like TR, RE, and crash came out

Nights. Nights was ACTUALLY a great game and well made but meh...

Sonic X-Treme was rumored..and became vaporware. You can find videos and a ROM (if you have a saturn emulator) of the game in test mode out there. Looks like a REALLY bad version of sonic adventure.

The first KILLER apps that sold playstations were Tombraider for sure, Resident evil, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Gameday, and Tekken 2.
