At prayer breakfast, Obama condemns use of religion as "a weapon"

“So how do we, as people of faith, reconcile these realities – the profound good, the strength, the tenacity, the compassion and love that can flow from all of our faiths, operating alongside those who seek to hijack religious for their own murderous ends?
“Humanity has been grappling with these questions throughout human history. And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ…. So this is not unique to one group or one religion. There is a tendency in us, a sinful tendency that can pervert and distort our faith.”

The usual suspects are mad, of course. You gotta be a fool to deny that Christianity was used to justify countless atrocities in world history.

Ta-Nehisi Coates just wrote a nice takedown of religious right wing distortion of history:

The Foolish, Historically Illiterate, Incredible Response to Obama's Prayer Breakfast Speech
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics...nse-to-obamas-prayer-breakfast-speech/385246/

On the cusp of plunging his country into a war that would cost some 750,000 lives, Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens paused to offer some explanation. His justification was not secular. The Confederacy was to be:

[T]he first government ever instituted upon the principles in strict conformity to nature, and the ordination of Providence, in furnishing the materials of human society ... With us, all of the white race, however high or low, rich or poor, are equal in the eye of the law. Not so with the negro. Subordination is his place. He, by nature, or by the curse against Canaan, is fitted for that condition which he occupies in our system. The architect, in the construction of buildings, lays the foundation with the proper material-the granite; then comes the brick or the marble. The substratum of our society is made of the material fitted by nature for it, and by experience we know that it is best, not only for the superior, but for the inferior race, that it should be so.

It is, indeed, in conformity with the ordinance of the Creator. It is not for us to inquire into the wisdom of His ordinances, or to question them. For His own purposes, He has made one race to differ from another, as He has made "one star to differ from another star in glory." The great objects of humanity are best attained when there is conformity to His laws and decrees, in the formation of governments as well as in all things else. Our confederacy is founded upon principles in strict conformity with these laws.

:blessed:

So tired of this idea that the US is divinely inspired and never did anything wrong. This country was built on the genocide of Native Americans, and built by African slaves. These people want to call this a Christian country then go ahead and tell me why a Christian country murdered and enslaved people. I'll wait.

his mother had a PHD in anthropology

and you know young kids are very curious and ask alot of questions, a young Obama would have been no different

So there's no way in hell Obama believes in the genesis story growing up with a mother who knew what she knew about that particular field of science and human origins.

I'm not saying he's lying about his religious beliefs, I'm just saying he's a politician and when you're in that type of career you have to do everything in your power to cater to the masses and appeal to them for votes.

If America was a muslim majority then Obama would rocking his kufi in the oval office everyday

I laughed at the outrage for two reasons:

1) When Obama was patronizing blacks fathers on fathers day everyone was all :salute:. But when he does the same to Christians, it's all

2) Agnostiscs/Deist/Athiest bring up this Southern Christian hypocrisy all the time. This is like the first point brought up when we argue about civil rights. Time to see what black christians are gonna do/say :mjpls:. Ever since the killing of the artist in France, christian liberals have been saying "the KKK considered themselves Christians. It doesn't mean that they were." To which most of us have been :sas1: is that so. Please expand upon your reason for why they are not Christians. Let's see if that reasoning doesn't eliminate every racist white person until the 1970s. Let's see if you'll actually stand by your accusation.

So Obama has to go back 1,000 years in history to find a left wing moral equivalence between Christians and today's Muslim terrorists????? :snoop:

Someone should tell Obama that we have the medieval Christian threat under control. He needs to start focusing on these Islamic extremists.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what I read... But if he's saying that religion is screwing up the world (more or less) I agree. I'm not a godless man but I think these cacs love to brainwash, and the major religions (at least Christianity, Islam, Judaism) divide and segregate ppl when they alwasy say they bring ppl together.

Gotta wonder whether the right wing focus on the Crusade comments means they don't think Slavery and Jim Crow were "barbaric." Hmmm.
:mjpls:

i was watching some Fox and not once did they bring up the slavery/Jim Crow comment. They're focusing entirely on the Crusades.

The real question is what does any of that (Crusades, slavery, Jim Crow) have to do with the threat of Islamic extremism in the world today?

because if people can use christianity to defend their wicked actions during slavery and jim crow then that mentality hasn't somehow disappeared from america, it's just dormant. we have to maintain our vigilance, NEVER FORGET. someone like you would have been cheesing in the lynch bbq party pictures. the only reason you aren't is because that's not what's going on today, but let some shyt like that start popping off and watch it rise out of its dormant state in you and the rest of the fukksnews fukk heads. sheep just waiting to follow the crowd.
