Sammy Sam wasn’t a clone, he was the blueprint for people like Troy, TI, and other gangster rappers. Dude was a polished rapper with bars, that could switch it up and hop on crunk records with ease. He was around, and on regional radio playlists, well before Troy was even making music.

Big Oomp records got really popular with Sam and his more “crunk” songs. Intoxicated, Loko, and a lot of the other artists would do the same, but didn’t have the lyricism of Sam. That Sam/DJ Montay combo pretty much set the stage for Atlanta gangsta rap and Atlanta crunk as an alternative to the Dungeon family throughout the mid/late 90’s. Everyone in the Attic crew, Troy, Ducktape, etc. is pretty the result of Dungeon family influence mixed with Oomp Camp influence. Nobody was going to say anything to Yung Wun because of Ruff Ryders lol

Troy IS Sam’s musical son lol. Troy basically replaced him in the Oomp Camp after he left though.
Sam was always either in label hell or jail, but he should have been way bigger than he was. Dude could write extremely infectious songs and effortlessly write something just as deep as what he heard on “soul food” or “Atliens”.
He couldn’t stay out of jail, or sober. Dude had plenty of regional hits. Go listen to “Last Man Standing” is a southern classic. I think he spoke on getting high as hell on coke and making the Troy diss after he got of jail lol.
You’ve probably heard him before on the radio with “Intoxicated”, Kuckle up, Ridin with some killaz/playaz, Down south slumz, etc.”

lol some of the Oomp camp tapes/CD’s (outside of Sam, Inoxicated, and Baby D) were so obscure you literally had to go into a Big Oomp CD’s and Tapes store in the middle of the hood to get them.
If Troy don’t get love anywhere else, he’ll always get love in Atlanta. Dude can go anywhere and draw a crowd like Fabo, and NOBODY will do anything but show love lol. I’ll always appreciate his willingness to include plenty of introspection and non-pop culture topics on his albums.

If you like the audio aesthetic of Pastor Troy’s music, you will probably enjoy all these. He’s actually featured on some of them. Some of the production Troy was rapping on after “Face Off” was done by DJ Montay, he’s pretty much the silent Mannie Fresh of Big Oomp Records.
Plus they have one of the finest collections of terribly made album covers in the game.
