I love how Vince Staples explained it on Drinkchamps podcast; pretty much everyone wears MLB hats and by default if you’re born somewhere, you’re gonna be affiliated or associated with some person due to everyone being in the community.
The way he explained it made it make more sense how some person could just end up in the wrong crowd regardless of their intentions.

It’s wild. I have an interview next week with Northrop Grumman. They are based out of Palmdale. I looked up the gang maps and both Palmdale and Lancaster has gangs.

Breh just mind your business and you'll be straight. Even the hat thing is overblown to an extent. If you don't look like the type of nikka to be banging, you most likely will be fine with whatever hat. Best to just leave it alone tho since it's an easy identifier. Besides the hat thing tho, just mind ya fukking business and live life like a regular nikka and none of that shyt will effect you.
