They were happening simultaneously more or less, Nevermind and Use Your Illusions I & II dropped only a week apart. I don’t think Guns carry on as a rock band the way they were at that point though, if they didn’t end up self destructing they would probably end up going more industrial like Nine Inch Nails. That’s what Chinese Democracy basically was, anyway so you can tell they were (Axl more specifically) wanting to go in that direction
