Berry Gordy no longer owns Jobete, he sold the remaining 20% share to EMI for 80 million in 2004

but I agree he is just as gangsta....when Method and Mary did "Your All I Need" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell only way Jobete was gonna clear the rights to it, is if 50% of the mechanical and ALL the publishing royalty remained with Jobete/Motown................

Method Man made NO BREAD on that song :snoop:

But isn't the method man version a cover? If I'm not mistaken they don't use a sample from the original, so they get a compulsory license.

Anybody can record a cover of any song that's been released as long as there's no samples it's all controlled by statute. I don't think berry gordy had anyway to stop that.

I'm usually not "fukk the industry" but poor kids from the hood might not be the most rational cats when it comes to signing contracts worth a lot of money, specially not when the counter party is industry legends and Ivey League lawyers. You could probably go to the hood right now and get a few cats to sign away their lives. It's taking advantage of young ignorant people.

However, Puff was not wrong.. Anyone would obviously try to maximize their profit and Lox would probably not be shyt without Puff.

Nah son, I don't think we can say ANYONE would have taken advantage right there. Certain people would, certain people would not. Puff would.

In reality, peoples talent is worth what people are prepared to pay for it. So say that even if they had a great advisor, Puff's offer might've still been the best offer. So either fukk bytches with Big, mad cash and stardom or stay broke in the hood.

I mean if you are buying something you are always hoping to get the lowest price possible, why pay more than necessary?
We're analyzing the results now with the correct answer, but historically speaking, if we look at what happens to most young rappers. Puff was taking a risk by signing them, the probably is high that he would be forced to write them off as a loss. And it's even worse now, which is why the contracts are even worse unless you built yourself a steady ground independently first.

Why do people phrase it like this..."signed away" their publishing...

Puff TOOK their publishing...they were not educated in the music business...puff was...they didn't have anyone looking out for their best interest financially...puff did...

And for all these dudes saying they shouldn't have signed it...then they were not going to get a record deal with Puff...cause either you give puff the publishing or you don't sign with bad boy...

And then what where they going to do...go back to the hood?

So you either sign your publishing away or you just stay in the same fukked up situation you are in now while you DON'T have a record deal...

The fact that Puff took that much of their publishing on the front and back end should let you know what type of person he is...

I can't even begin to understand that type of greed
Yea I don't understand raping your own artist. I mean Bad Boys is a graveyard now anyway. He doesn't have anymore BIG records to release so he can't ride biggies coattails anymore longer. Just keep having bad boy reunion ion tours bc that's the only way hell keep that label relevant...at least for a couple months

*this was not a good idea*
I gave great reasons for my views.
You're not responding with enough intelligence,to call my viewpoint "dumbest sh1t" you've heard.
Your're just being emotional.
It's not about them never going double in general,it's about them being a part of extremely successful camps (in their primes) and flopping in comparison to what their camps were doing in those moments. Meaning they had the eyes and ears on them and their camps, yet couldnt move alot of joints cause despite the attention, fans left them hanging cause they clearly werent impressed.
And I specifically said they don't posses the talent of GREAT PERFORMACE.
Meaning they don't sound great on the mic vocally. I think Jada and Styles can spit.
Styles being my favorite of the bunch
