Its worth noting that the practice of not gendering (or even not naming your children) isnt that bizare both historically and in contemporaryt times. Many societies have basically considered their children as nonpersons until a formal coming of age ceremony. Some even considered them sexless unitl that same coming of age ceremony. This encapsulates cultures ranging in places from the mediteranian , to the middle east, to mezoamericans, to pacific islanders, to south asians. Obviously none of these places are in harlem
But i will admit that most of these societies basically let their kids become the gender asigned at birth. They werent really doing it with the intention of letting their be a second option of identification for their offspring. It was moreso about hitting a pause button on their personhood. Its been more than half a decade since i was in a mandatory anthro course in college, but off the top of my head, i believe the forebearers of the Persians did this specifically with gender fluidity in mind. So did the forebearers of the Hindu society. According to our old ANTH professor, both societies actually ascribed a special caste to these crossgender individuals and gave them protected class status similar to what California does with its Sanfrancisco residents.
As a sidenote, i never really expected to use this knowldge from those bussy-work , schedule- filler, general-ed classes in my life. Certianly not in a coli thread
