Were the 96 and 03 drafts hyped up as much as the 2014 draft?

Seems like people are ready to crown this as THE draft, the one that brings all kinds of legends and allstars in to the game, the best of the decade like (84,96,03)

From what I remember, '96 was pure excitement, but not much hype.

With the advancement of social media, "hype" grew into the monster that it is now.

I think '03 was the start of ultra draft hype movement

this is the first super-hyped draft since the one-and-done rule.

so its like, people were basically hyping this draft up since 2012. that's a 2-year hype due to the circumstances.

Definitely...03 more...

Low key 92 was as well...shaq and ZO was CRAZY HYPED
yeah, '92 was the last really hyped up draft before 2003

Shaq, Zo, Christian Lattener was seen as the GOAT college player, Jimmy Jackson as well.

'96 wasnt anywhere near the hype of '92 and '03, but it was the better draft.

2004 was hyped up as well, and would have probably got similar love if those guys went college for a year.

96 wasn't really hyped like that prior to the draft. It was Iverson, a small guard, and Camby, a non-offensive big man at the top. That doesn't really move the needle. :heh: HS players were still an unproven commodity as well. Nobody knew Kobe would be Kobe or Nash would be Nash or O'Neal would be what he was for a minute. That draft recieved all it's hype after the fact when guys proved themselves in the league.

03 was huge because you had the next Jordan and the next Bird and Magic wrapped up together at the top with Bron and Melo and you had the next Dirk in Darko.

In terms of pre-draft hype its

I think the level of hype is relative to the time period the draft occurs. In 92 everybody was curious to see where Shaq was gonna end up, but past the top 4 the rest of the draft was nothing to write home about. Weatherspoon, Miner, and Walt Williams names were not ringing out nationally like that. 96 was pre-internet age or it woulda got the same hype this one is getting.

That's most NBA drafts. NBA is the most top heavy off all the sports. People weren't checking for HS players or ever freshman in college like that in 96 so there is no way all these 1st year players would be as hyped or even expected to come out after one year.

The hype isn't comparable relatively though. There just wasn't a lot of star power in that draft, well at least people didn't foresee it. 92 had plenty of hype, four years prior, because you had big names who were expected to do big things. Like I said 96 is a draft that was more so appreciated after the fact when a lot of guys surpassed expectations.

1st, let me say I'm not interested in this argument at all. It's a waste. 2nd....how is it NOT comparable relatively? We talking about 2 different eras with completely different social and technological advancements. 3rd, when you say this:

"People weren't checking for HS players or ever freshman in college like that in 96"

You're making a relative comparison as well. Lets agree to disagree even tho we're really not. :ld:

It's very simple really. Back in 96 the stars were made in college. HS players were most unknown and an unproven commodity. Today stars are made in HS. There are more HS stars starting in college this year and expected to come out next year and make noise in the league than there were college stars coming out in 96 expected to make noise in the league. Thusly the hype was not as big on any level. So it's not the time period or technology or the mediums that people were using that was the issue in 96 it was the level of starpower.
