No one gives a fukk about all those goddamn numbers breh.
You don't have to give a fukk about all those "goddamn numbers", you just have to give a fukk about how the game is played. That requires more than just referencing the box score, hell it requires more than just referencing any sort of stat - you need to know shyt behind the numbers. Yet what's happened is, folk have become too reliant upon what the traditional box score says and ignored practically everything else, so much so that any discussion based around activity that's not recorded in the box score (altering shots, screening on-ball/off-ball, navigating around screens on ball-handlers, collapsing defenses on drives and finding an open man, off-ball play, help defense, forcing players to give up the ball etc etc) is not acknowledged on the same level.

Anything that's not in the box score, folk don't even bother discussing anymore. Which has led to the very argument in this thread about winning and triple doubles.
Who says it explains everything? It explains everything that I want to know. I don't have this insatiable desire to understand everything about basketball.
What you really mean is "advanced stats" have ruined your ability to be an oaf; you can no longer watch the game in a dumbed-down state in peace, because people are hip to shyt outside the box score and therefore people now know if you're talking nonsense or not. If you believe that's your prerogative - that's fine, just don't involve yourself in any discussion based around what's actually going on, like you've done by just quoting me. There was no reason for you to quote me if all you were going to basically say is -

"Just let me be dumb. Ignorance is bliss. :sadbron:"
For one, its not my job
I'm not a politician, nutritionist, dentist, director, accountant, doctor/nurse etc etc, yet that doesn't mean I just close my brain off to those fields, whenever an opportunity arises for me to learn more.
Secondly It's entertainment.
I can enjoy basketball strictly from an entertainment standpoint, and appreciate the inner workings/nuances of it as well. It's not ONE or the other for me. I don't know why you're insinuating that it has to be.
I don't want to see stats that say why Kobe is not money from mid range. In my mind, Kobe is money from mid range and that's a part of what makes sports great. The illusions, the myths, the false truths. Even if he's not money from mid range, he's money to me :yeshrug:
If you're fine with believing "illusions, myths and false truths", than that's fine. Just don't say dumb shyt like 'advanced stats have ruined sports talk', like somehow facts and actual truths are things that "ruin" discussions.
Watching basketball from your eyes, eyes that have to understand everything, and break everything down to a science when it should be appreciated as an art form, has to be MISERABLE.
:dwillhuh:

It's anything but miserable, I learn something new every single time I watch the game. You sound extremely narrow-minded, being able to appreciate it as an "artform" doesn't mean you have to believe shyt that isn't true - I can still appreciate Kobe's footwork/jumpshot mechanics, while also acknowledging that he can be inefficient because of his shot selection. Nothing is stopping me from acknowledging both.
I'll stay over here with the dummies who just care about the box score. All you advanced acronym agents can over there and watch your sports with a pen, pad and calculator instead of a cold one and a sandwich.

Thank you.
:heh:

I. Advanced stats are NOT all about PER, VORP, WS, DWS and such like, in fact those type of metrics suffer from the same shyt the traditional box score does - being too generalized. For the most part, they don't have any place in a sport like basketball, especially for individual players [multicollinearity and su-context]. Advanced stats can be anything from what percentage a player shoots on corner 3s, to how often a defender keeps a ball-handler from driving into the paint (% wise).

II. You're acting like it's impossible to have "a cold one and a sandwich" while being able to identify and breakdown what's going on, off the top.

III. Smarten up.

Oh please, I don't watch media, or believe narratives. I just follow my eyes. I just had a discussion in the Knicks thread about how much I hate media narratives.

Doesn't change the fact that advanced stats are POINTLESS. Or the fact that there are "stats" for everything. Or that most important fact that you can get a number to say anything you want.

Enjoy yourself though.
That's not a fact, that's just your misinformed, ignorant, smart-dumb opinion. Basketball is a numbers game, therefore stats that go beyond the box score are most definitely not "pointless".

Instead of talking about how a player actually performed in a game - the appropriate context with basketball terminology, all we ever do is spew mindless "x-player had 20 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds" type shyt. And hey, I'm not without blame either, because I too am guilty of doing the same thing on occasion. Except at least I try to dig beneath the surface as often as I can, and not allow the BS to rule my understanding/view of the game.
