Not clearing samples isn’t as big of a deal as it’s made to be on here. Some indie labels don’t even bother trying to clear samples in 2018. shyt even in the glory days of sampling, albums like Hell on Earth, Liquid Swords, and Cuban Linx all have a lot of samples that they never even tried to clear.

I would say 50% of sampled music that you heard in the golden years was not cleared, and now the number is probably much higher.

I’m not saying it’s a good practice that griselda doesn’t clear them nor am I saying they don’t do things that go against the grain of the industry.

But I would be very surprised if anyone has a problem with them not clearing samples for what are essentially just mixtapes from a music business perspective.

Edit: there’s not even an entity to clear samples for them. It’s usyally the label’s job to do that and since they haven’t dropped anything on Shady yet and are only dropping basically mixtapes, they don’t have much of an infrastructure to clear samples, which by itself is a long and annoying process, even when it goes smoothly. Usually on a proper release during a project there is at least one person whose entire (full time) job is to handle the clearing of samples. I worked on an Atlantic Records release with about 20 samples that needed cleared and it was a massive pain.

Its not for lil rappers like necro. He streams his stuff and sells on itunes and dont clear samples. Even he got busted once or twice.

The samples on cuban linx not cleared are still unknown. Rza been sued for multiple albums with samples. Hence bobby digital. Ironman and supreme clientele got rza sued a bunch. He even got sued for dark fantasy.

Theres no receipts for these guys albums. They too popular to stream being signed to a major. They arent even indie anymore. But they do it cuz thats only way they gon make bread. Hence why they dont have an official shady release and all there stuff sold at weirdo indie rap shops that sell out in seconds. You said ut yaself. Its a pain. And im sure shady is slowly putting together a cheap project that is atleast worth the money spent.

Shady would jever release any of these albums. Period. They too expensive. This is the only way we hear them. Through these “mixtapes” that dont get sold normally.

Theres a whole subculture of hiphop thatll never be on the radio because of this. I dont think its a conspiracy at all.

They dont need an entitiy. I can clear samples. @C-Styles from here clears samples. Thats why he can make youtube videos with samples. shyt gets flagged asap these days.Thats why yiu dont see these guys everywhere. Technically they doing they thing business wise. fukk the radio.

Yeah but that was 20 years ago breh... since then there's been countless albums that have changed significantly due to sample clearance. They are still coming at artists for sample clearance from music in the 90s. We've seen albums that have had songs removed, so if you didn't have the original pressing you may never know that track was on the album. When publishers realized how much money hip-hop was making, they come for their cut if the user didn't have permission. Most of the samples used aren't credited, to avoid this problem.

All of these mixtapes that have come from Griselda have nothing to do with Shady. Shady gonna stay far away from that shyt if it means them having to shell over cash for something that isn't even selling that well. Of course, if you're a mixtape rapper and nobody knows you you can get away from it because if you a label is going to sue, they have to at least be able to recoup lawyer fees, which you can't do with something that isn't selling anything.

Yeah I don't disagree with any of that, and I never said there's a conspiracy against these guys. I think quite the opposite. I agree on basically everything that you said, and I thought I was trying to say basically this in my post.

Yeah I must have said something wrong or had a miscommunication in my post because I agree with everything that you said here.

It's easy to miss but I think it's dope how Alchemist keeps the same drums on Puerto Rico but fades the beat out at 1:14 and then when he brings it back in it's a new sample flip for the melody. But it's easy to miss because he re-flipped a similar part of the same sample.

The first beat on "nikkas In Puerto Rico" deserves more than a single minute. Would love to hear an extended version of that instrumental on the next installment of Alc's "Rapper's Best Friend" series

I might be suffering from Griselda fatigue. The sheer amount of material they've released in the last year and the percentage of it I've eagerly consumed has left me a little exhausted. Not really feeling this compared to past WSG projects.
