Thanks Overwatch.

Shadow of War, Forza 7, WWE 2K18, Assassin's Creed: Origins, Star Wars Battlefront 2 pretty much every major new game has them now. Because it's not enough for you to buy DLC directly you need to buy a chance to get the piece of DLC you want or not.

It sucks, but a lot of this shyt is cosmetic or extras. Unlike VC in NBA 2K18 which forces you to grind unlike sports games in the past in an effort to try and get you to spend extra money.

People are bytching about this yet a AAA title was released last year (Titanfall 2) with a bunch of things added on for free and no praise is given.

The bottom line:
Gamers like to bytch about loot boxes, but nobody is exactly fighting for games that continue to add content as time goes on for free.

People are just always looking for something to bytch over.

This is the new wave. Soon we will move on and find something else to be angry at:beli:
It's predatory practices to prey on people with addictive personalities and gambling addictions. Imported straight from the free to play mobile economy straight into our $60 retail games.

Honestly they could just sell you the content directly but probably make much more off the gambling addicts selling it like this.

Gamers aren't victims just like gamblers aren't victims.

People are paying for their own enjoyment. Nobody is forcing people to buy loot boxes.

As long as the game is fun and worth the money for the base cost of the game, loot boxes are the best out of all the long term monetization schemes for all parties involved.

Have you ever battled an addiction only to have it be inserted into something you like to do that has nothing to do with it?

These games have nothing to do with the gambling mechanics now being inserted into them.

Saying oh you don't have to buy it misses the point. Many of us aren't buying this stuff but the gambling addicts are. Like free to pay mobile a small portion of the player base spends a disproportionate amount of the money on the stuff.

Buying a pack of cards is just that. Buying a car racing game only to have it dangle gambling in front of you is far different.

I don't think every game of chance is "gambling". the outcome of some kind of probabilistic model is a key mechanic in many games

Loot boxes are gambling by the textbook definition.
the definition of gambling
the activity or practice of playing at a game of chance for money or other stakes.

1.
to play at any game of chance for money or other stakes.
2.
to stake or risk money, or anything of value, on the outcome of something involving chance:
Loot boxes in video games are unregulated gambling.

Why do keep speaking like myplayer is the only mode in 2K? The shyt only makes up like 1/8th of the game.

the definition of gambling

Loot boxes in video games are unregulated gambling.
that is a dictionary definition that would cover a lot of mechanics found in games

the legal definition, and what should be regulated, usually includes more factors. paying money hoping to win more money or a prize worth more than you put in, and also a (good) chance of not getting anything at all

when you buy a loot box, or pack of pokemon cards, you always get something. the mystery of what you get is supposed to be part of the fun

there isn't really an inherent value to what you win, if you have no option to officially sell it back. the grey market value of collectables can be a different story. for instance, a rare old penny might be worth a lot to a collector, but the US Mint still thinks it's worth 1 cent

If there's nothing sinister about any of this then why can't the player forego it and buy the item in question outright? Why aren't both options available. Have the fun of winning it maybe for less than the price it cost directly.

The reason you can't buy it directly is because they can make more money per customer if they only allow you to gamble to win it.

Why let me pay $10 for an in game skin when I can buy $40 worth of loot boxes and maybe still not even get it?

People like me I've never gambled in my life ever played the lottery or stepped foot in a casino because I believe gambling is stupid so I'm instantly turned off buy it but others who are addicted to gambling will blow through huge amounts of money on these type of games.

Do they even have to publish the odds of getting these items?
