I know I haven't listened to as much 90s and 2000s and even current day BAY AREA hip-hop as I should. It just never really caught me like it does other people. My familiarity with Mac Dre, Andre nickatina, tha jacka and others like that is pretty much zero outside a few tracks and an album or two. E40 about the only one I really dove into it

All the new age younger generation favs like xxxtencion or pop smoke, drake, young thug, mac miller, gunna, lil yachty, Kevin Gates, haven't listened to them at all really

Anything from Snoop post blue carpet treatment, anything from dre post chronic 2001, anything from Eminem post relapse

Andres flute album

Anything from Jay-Z post 4:44

4/6 nas albums with hit boy I didn't listen

I've never done a deep dive on dilla like I have madlib or alc or premo or qtip etc. I know he's considered the goat by many but I never really found his shyt to be something that appealing :ehh:

I have more I'll add on later. What about y'all?

The only full Tribe album I ever heard was BRL and that's only from hearing it in chunks of being around ppl playing it, I think I only ever listened to maybe 2 or 3 full Busta Rhymes albums. Theres a ton of super prominent rappers from the past 10 years I probably never heard a full song from. Only Griselda songs I ever heard were because of a feature. Haven't listened to a Wayne album since C3. Most of the drill shyt I dont know, most of the melodic goth rappers like Uzi and Trippie I probably never heard more than a song or 2. I definitely have some big gaps in a lot of prominent areas of rap, especially the past decade.

Some of the stuff before me that I never sought out: Brand Nubian, Tribe, Gangstarr, Pharcyde, Freddie Foxx

I was only in single digits age for most of the 90s

I gave brand Nubian some spins when I was younger and I didn't consider it to be anything remarkable :yeshrug:

Maybe if I was experiencing it in real time back then I would appreciate it more. But it was just ehhhh

Correct me if im wrong, but this thread is like phenomena or trends you wish you would get into but cant or seems to daunting.

Hip-hop, incant really say. I listen to shyt i like and still look for new shyt thats dope.

Hip-hop adjacent In RNB, id say its Rkelly.
I tried listening to earlier shyt thru mid 2000 and it dont hit. Id rather listen to d’angelos or maxwell shyt if i want that kind of rnb.

Starting listening to hip-hop during the rocafella/dipset era so there was alot of music I had to catch up on. Right now, of the top of my head

All Tribe albums
All De la albums before Grind Date
All Gangstarr albums before Moment of Truth
All Pete & CL albums
All EMPD albums
All Redman albums
A few Wu-Tang albums

Best thing about hip-hop being kinda bad in the last few years is that it has given me alot of time to listen to albums that I had overlooked in the past. I love going back into the 90's and enjoy old albums as if they were new

Could be that or could be classics that you know you haven't listened to (example: maybe you never listened to KRS-ONE or schooly d), eras or movements that you never really followed and never went back to listen to (example:maybe you didn't listen to any g-unit mixtapes or any rawkus era underground shyt). Could be back stories on artists you never really looked into. Maybe it's technical aspects (example: how exactly did finding samples and chopping them work back in the days of cassettes? What equipment did they use?). Etc etc could be anything

Another one I just thought of for myself is the dipset era. Outside of camrons solo albums I don't know I ever really listened to any of em..
