Funny you made this thread because "I Am Setsuna" comes out in a couple days. It's been called a modern version of "Chrono Trigger":



Not a Japanese game but "Divinity: Original Sin" is undiluted crack. Has the GOAT battle system for an RPG, IMO:



"Child Of Light". Looks like a side scroller, but plays like a turn based RPG. Really great game:



"Darkest Dungeon". Kind of a weird horror/RPG, but kinda cool:



I'll post more as I think of them.
