Essentially said the bargain we as Americans have was that we have been able to weather higher housing, transportation, medical costs etc because we have access to cheap consumer durables and other products.

This one isn't that bad. Covid was a situation where nothing was available on Earth.
But this time if you really need something most of us have access to Mexico or Canada unless you are in Middle America. I'd argue that the tariff stimulates the border economies of these two countries, and rather than stimulating manufacturing here.
