Assata Shakur is a former black panther/black liberation army member. There was an incident on the nj turnpike in the early 70s where she and a couple others were involved in a shoot out with police during which a cop was killed. She was shot in the arm and stomach I believe. They threw the murder charge on her. The book details her childhood (split between NC and NY), coming of age into the black panther party, incident on the NJ turnpike, and incarceration. She was broken out of prison and fled to Cuba, US govt has been trying to get them to turn her over for years. Also Pac's aunt or godmother I can't remember
