Despite it being an homage to Metroid almost to the point of plagarism, it does it well and feels just as good as anything Nintendo would release in that series.
I've played the original Brickout on Atari with the knob controller

and dozens of other variants inbetween, Arkanoid and all that shyt, and this is by the far the best in the genre and I almost refuse to play anything else 'cause of how good it is. The added power ups add without making the game feel too easy or too different from the source material and the music is lowkey zeldaesque piff.
Gradius

R-Type, you choose which one this one reminds you of, but for a

breh like me, when I first played this shyt, it made me stop pining for Einhander for a hot minute since it reminded me so much of it with the music and the fast pace space action without being TOO much of a bullet hell title.
Played a ton of older pc titles where you had the option of moving the ship's nose around in a full circle and boost/thrust across to any side of the screen as opposed to being on rails like you would with an R-type/Gradius type setup. Can't recall any titles since back then it was all shareware/demos but this harkens back to them days, plus I like the visual presentation with the hud showing the pilot and all the dialogue. Good shyt.
With games like Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim vs the world and the recently released Rivercity Ransom Underground making headlines and all, a game like Charlie Murder would be very hard pressed to find room to run with those titles, especially since it couldn't generate enough interest to reach Castle Crashers level, have a fanbase already established like SPvTW, or be a legacy title like Rivercity but truth be told, I own all the titles mentioned, played 'em and beat (Still shlocking through Rivercity though) and I think Charlie Murder is just as good if not better in some cases. Excellent soundtrack too. The few times I got to play this four player it sorta felt like a mashup between Streets of Rage and Turtles in Time.
Reminds me heavily of this retarded little game called Pigs of War for the ps1

mixed in with a bit of Operation Darkness (turn based gun rpg) and a touch of FF Tactics with characters being able to die (Permadeth) if left down for too long and such; now while something like that is pretty much whatever for rpgs that give you generic, nameless characters for you to level up and form your own attachment to, everyone on the battlefield has a unique name, look and story, so it makes keeping your squad alive even more of a priority if you want to keep as many folk alive to unlock the full story.
