I think music theory will help you, but you can't be stuck to the grid. Music is all about the soul, I definitely agree, but knowledge never hurts you unless you take it 100% to heart and put that on everything. Even some musicians themselves who know it will tell you to not get too caught up in it. But if you want something structured, music theory can definitely get you there.

I'd also say it's great for people who really want to learn about how music actually works. Like the real science behind it. It's really interesting, in my humble opinion. :ehh:

If youre serious, you should try to learn SOME of it. History has proven that you dont really have to, but youre severely limiting your skillset and versatility

Im far from a theory expert, but I learned a few chords and how to differentiate a few different scales. I can "get in key" and play along with whatevers playing without much trial and error. Adds to the "social" aspect of music and has opened my mind to more elaborate instrumentation if Im adding to a beat or a sample-melody :yeshrug:

I bet trap producers know more music theory than boom bap producers op.

Metro Boomin talked about learning it in high school and guys like Zaytoven and London are pretty much gotdamn classical pianists.

All these trap dude's don't sample shyt and come up with their own original chords and melodies, yet you think they are all completely clueless when it comes to theory? Come on son...

most of these cats in the game that are trap producers probably don't even know music theory, and their brains are fried from popping percs, xans and sipping lean. they are stuck making the same shyt with just a different synth or something. it makes learning music theory not even worth it to the aspiring producer/composer.

I would argue that there are more trap producers who play instrus, read music and know theory than the iconic producers from the past. The guys from he past were good at mixing and matching patches of sound but very few if any of those guys could do this

You can definitely hear the difference in quality tho, no disrespect to Zay.

Side note. Hip Hop Beat Makers and Producers get way too much hate. Sometimes I get confused on who's doing all of the hatin :patrice:

NO POINT,

(1) That is just Western Culture making music into some "technical" art form, and that's why White People could never develop the Blues, Jazz and Rock N Roll...Because they were taught "after this chord, then this chord must follow, and when use these chords, you must use these melodies"...

It STUMPS creativity...

(2) It is more BENEFICIAL to learn how to play an instrument with or without the music theory...People in Africa and other parts of the world play BEAUTIFUL music and they don't know SHAT about "music theory"...

All they know what sounds good, and which rhythms elicits what emotions...They play by feel, and that's why the music (in my opinion) tends to be more melodic and hypnotic and even surprising than Western Music...

(3) Conclusion, Music Theory is box, don't get stuck inside of it...Make music according to feeling and rhythm, and keep it simple, that's what people LOVE...

I agree. I always felt that many of the things that black people do/learn is done intuitively. Maybe we it is related to our melanin production.

On the flip side people who don't produce melanin have a difficult time picking up on things intuitively so because of that they need to codify things so that other non-melanin producing people can learn as well. That's why black kids see the dab and other dances and they naturally pick it up. While non-melanated people need a step by step instructional video.

Black people have been subjugated, in our recent history, so we were convinced that we should do things the same way that non-melanated people do things. Thus, we have black people taking Music Theory classes instead of experimenting with instruments and learning intuitively like Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, or James Brown.

All those guys were musically brilliant but I don't know for sure if they took Music Theory classes.

As a sample based producer, Ive found that music theory doesn't affect my craft.
That said, I did study classical piano when I was very young, so music theory might be engrained in my subconscious :ehh:

In his autobiography Miles Davis said that learning music theory helped him a little but he dropped out because the classes were too focused on the western & white style of music & his teachers scoffed at what he, Charlie Parker & them were doing in the 40's
So basically it's not a necessity imo..Just look at RZA..he learned music theory & regressed
