A new Syrian constitution to be voted on later this month effectively puts an end to nearly five decades of single Baath Party rule, according to the text.
The proposed constitution, which will be put to a vote on February 26, does away with Article 8 of the old charter which declared the Baath Party, in power since 1963, as the "leader of the state and society."

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has decreed to hold a referendum for a new constitution on February 26, the official SANA state news agency reported on today.
"President Bashar al-Assad issued today a decree setting Sunday, February 26, as the date for the referendum on the draft constitution," SANA reported.
Syrian state television said the new constitution would allow the "people to govern the people" under a new multi-party democratic system.
It said that under the proposed text, freedom is "a sacred right" and that any violation of personal freedom is considered a crime punishable by law.

On Sunday, a commission tasked with drawing up a new constitution submitted a draft charter to Assad, SANA reported, adding he would review it and send it to the People's Assembly before a vote.
In January, Assad said a new constitution was being drawn up by a committee set up in October to replace the current one, which enshrines his Baath party's dominant role.
At the time, he said it could be put to a popular vote as early as March, although that date for the ballot has now been brought forward.
Syria's government lifted a state of emergency in April last year and in July adopted a law allowing a multi-party political system.

They aren't having a revolution...because the revolution is led by non-Syrians with backing from Saudi Arabia. Any real Syrian knows you can't trust S.A. in being your ally.

I'm calling bullshyt here. We have to be anti-war without being pro-Assad, and this article's attempt to make him look like some benevolent leader who's learning democracy is false. He's trash, and that's the reason there are so many different rebel groups are against him. If things were getting more democratic, the rebellion would have settled down by now, or at least been deflated, since many of their goals would have been met, but the Syrian people know better, which is why they rejected his new constitution proposal as too little, too late, even if they voted yes on its basic principles.

don't get me wrong, Asad is trash, but I don't think it's useful to judge somebody by the number of their enemies, particularly when a large percentage of those "Syrian" rebels are fighting Asad not because of his authoritarianism but because he belongs to the wrong sect.

the sad truth is, virtually all of the Syrians that were fighting for democracy and freedom at the start of the uprising are currently in refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan.

Call it b.s. ...

1. What different rebels....can you name the groups?
2. This is about getting Iran to fumble into a war to start with Israel....nothing more
3. What Syrian People...do you know the population of the country?
4. Read the article and understand what is real
