Music torrent site What.cd has been shut down
What.cd, an invite-only music torrent website first launched in 2007, has been shut down after a raid by French authorities. The private tracker offered free (and often illegal) access to a massive, deeply thorough collection of music and was popular among audiophiles for its strict rules around quality and file formats. The site was created after the shutdown of another well-known torrent website, Oink, which operated between 2004 and 2007. Though its primary focus was music sharing, What.cd also permitted torrents of computer software, ebooks, and other content.

Zataz Magazine is reporting 12 servers that powered What.cd’s infrastructure were seized by French cybercrime authorities. What.cd hasn’t been taken offline completely, but torrents are unavailable and the homepage now displays a message confirming its demise:

Due to some recent events, What.CD is shutting down. We are not likely to return any time soon in our current form. All site and user data has been destroyed. So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Used it hardcore for like a year until my ratio went to shyt. Keep us updated on the replacement brehs.

There probably won't be any worthy replacements for years maybe. There was so much shyt on there that probably will never be available on the internet again

I had about a 100GB buffer to spend too, and still had 14 FL tokens :sadcam: Was just about to start converting a lot of my collection to FLAC

No bullshyt, this site was the LARGEST archive of music on the web.

They had FLAC's of certain songs you couldn't get elsewhere, not even purchasable.

There was stuff on there that's basically impossible to get anywhere else (legal or otherwise) without years searching, a time machine, and a planet spanning teleporter, along with selling some body parts to cover the price some releases come at. Plus the music discovery, community (pretentious gits as they could be), and layout beat any of the legal alternatives.

This site will truly be missed. Seriously.

Well, this hurts, maybe more than when OiNK went down. I never even bothered to look for an alternative private tracker. This sucks.

yea they recently changed from .com to .ch or some shyt. this like the 3rd or 4th time they had to shut down. i'm hoping they come back cause with out a way to get music for free ....i hate to admit it but....i just won't be listening to shyt :manny:
I listen to new releases like DC4 on youtube but i probably only do that once or twice before moving on. if i can actually get the album and play it in my whip it might get more rotation

If I wasn't broke I'd consider copping a Tidal subscription, only downside is their library is small in comparison to most other streaming sites, let alone the library what.cd had built up.

Might have to start copping some shyt for rutracker or something until the new wave pops up.

will probably never be replaced... i was on there since inception. there was no other place like it for music. waffles was cool, but was never on that level. true end of an era.

I've been around for a couple years, I'm a young breh so I was pretty lucky to get an invite when I hit the age where I really started getting into music.

It's a shame that myself and so many others will probably never get a chance to listen to some of that music ever again.

I can't be too greedy though, I'm very grateful for the couple hundred-thousand GB of music that I did get, allegedly.

Hopefully this is the start of something even better though.
