China owns a significant chunk of the national debt. Much of the US debt is owed by private companies too, but guess which country is producing more and more millionaire investors who are buying bigger and bigger stakes in American companies.
China can afford to play the long game while pretending they want smoke in a military sense. By making threats they're boosting investment in domestic arms manufacturing companies and the stakes that their own millionaires and billionaires potentially have in American arms manufacturers like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. The Chinese government can pump the value of those stocks, tax the millionaires in their borders slightly more and then use that same revenue to invest in domestic arms manufacturing to compete with the American counter parts. The Chinese arms manufacturers if recording higher profits from selling to poorer countries and from investors from other parts of the world can use that revenue to fund corporate espionage teams who can steal American and European arms tech and use it domestically.
The plan is multifold:
A. strangle America economically by buying larger and larger stakes in American companies or just outright buying the whole companies and assume the credit they have over the American government with the government bonds they've bought.
B.Continue to buy government bonds to have more and more of the U.S. debt with the national Chinese banks.
C. Continue making empty threats to allow their private investors to literally profit off U.S. arms companies who typically see a boost in share value when a war looks like it could be coming.
D. Use those profits to buy bigger stakes in American arms companies+fund Chinese arms companies to steal U.S. manufacturing techniques.
E. Sell high quality weapons at a lower price to unstable dictatorships around the world and further make Chinese arms more competitive.
F. Call in that debt. If America tries to say "fukk you we ain't paying. Make us p*ssy. Matter of fact, we suspect your country needs some liberation so we going over there to spread freedom and democracy like we did in Afghanistan and Iraq" well China has them tools on deck too because they calmly built up their arms manufacturing.
If they don't subjugate America economically by owning its corporations and calling in those debts, they can militarily if they've had enough time to steal American secrets and develop equivalent or even better versions of American weapons. It's already happening:
