After I finish high school next year I don't know what to do. :jbhmm:

To be honest I wanted to be a programmer when I was like 13 but I never pursued it enough because I thought my family was too poor to send me to college. So now I'm about to enter the senior year, graduate, and it's like what the fukk do I do? :yeshrug:

Right now my last choice is trade school and become whatever crappy job I land with and hopefully gain a better job.

What did you do? What should I do? I need help, and this summer I'm trying to find all the answers. :francis:

In case you want to go into engineering or sciences due to a change of mind, take all the pre reqs.

If you don't know what you are going to do, then take a year off and grind. Make as much money as possible and then go a year after into whatever you are interested.

Check out this IT thread for more information on getting into the information technology field.

If after you take a year off and you still aren't sure, go to trade school and go from there.

If you are interested in programming you can learn how to program yourself by learning the material, doing projects, interning and then getting hired.

This is in the IT/certs thread for your information but I have to warn you it is long, arduous and requires self discipline. You aren't in school where the material is given to you in a strict curriculum and you mindlessly do it, no self teaching is all about you taking initiative to map your learning.

The articles I posted shouldn't be a be all end all guide but a way for you to see methods to get into the industry.

Nice. When can I expect to see the money start flowing in if I start learning now? Or do I have to sow the seeds and wait for the profits later.

You learn from scratch by reading, working on the code and then building something you need. Then as time goes on you will start to be snappier in decision making and start to understand how to code instead of mindlessly copying and pasting. Takes time but constant practice will get you there and make sure to keep storage place for all your projects, failures and successes.

You have a full year and then some, you got time but don't think just cause you got time that you can procrastinate. Unless you want this to be your career then don't even bother nikka. Real talk.

Think of coding as writing a book. The different programming languages are like the different real world languages (English, French, Spanish, etc...)

Learning how to code is like grammar. You're learning the syntax and logical thinking behind how the code turns into what you see on your computer screen.

Once you know the coding language most useful for what you want to do, you can write almost any book you want.

You don't need a degree to be a programmer specifically, you just need to show employers examples of projects you've worked on independently and how it translates into transferreable skills for the particular job you're applying for.

There are tons of online self-teach coding websites that cover more than the basics. Give those a try and see how you like it. You cant like the idea of being a coder, you have to actually write code and enjoy it to be a coder. Or else you'll go insane doing it for the money.

I see, so it's like having a continuous resume as you get better and better. :patrice:

Programming is peaking my interests tbh :whoo:
