The 2024–25 New York Knicks season ended in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Knicks were unable to get past the Indiana Pacers and ultimately fell short of their goal. However, the playoff run did include an impressive victory over the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics.
Despite the deep playoff run, it wasn’t enough to save Tom Thibodeau’s job. Hired in July 2020, Thibodeau concluded his tenure with the Knicks after a season in which he won 61% of his games.
Now, nearly a month has passed without a head coach. Thibodeau was fired on June 3, and the Knicks have yet to officially name his replacement. The latest development is intriguing, @KnicksFanTV reports that the Knicks have reached out to South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley regarding the position.
The 55-year-old Staley, a Philadelphia native, would certainly face a difficult decision if given the chance to become the NBA’s first female head coach at Madison Square Garden. A former star at Virginia, Staley was drafted by the Charlotte Sting in 1999 and became a six-time WNBA All-Star during her playing career.
As a coach, she has captured three NCAA Tournament titles, with the most recent coming in 2024. Staley’s teams have reached the Final Four seven times, including each of the last five seasons.

There is no clear indication of Staley’s interest in the job or how far discussions have progressed. Meanwhile, the Knicks are reportedly bringing back Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown for second interviews. Micah Nori remains another candidate to watch.
The Knicks have not won an NBA title since the 1973 season and have not appeared in the NBA
