so after all the backlash Microsoft received from windows 8 lack of a start button, they are adding it back as windows 8.1???

has anyone seen or tried this yet? I might make the switch if it's piff.

Had the release preview for a week or so. The changes were great, felt like an enhanced windows 7 instead of two different gimped operating systems. The release preview was BUGGY AS fukk tho so I had to uninstall it.

Windows 8 is an enhanced version of Windows 7. you don't have to bother with Metro if you don't want to.

Yes.

But now it actually feels that way.
i have the vanilla Windows 8. i created a script that boots to desktop and opens a Windows explorer window. i haven't ran an app in the metro interface all year. the only time i see the 'start screen' (which is what Windows Blue has btw it just has a dedicated button to open that same screen instead of clicking in the corner) is when i wanna search to open a program that isn't pinned to the task bar.

Windows 8 always was better than Windows 7. people just don't like it because it gutted the traditional start menu and replaced it with something that's a departure but far better.

in Windows 8 if you wanna open a program you just hit the windows key and start typing and with in 3 keystrokes you'll see it listed onscreen. hell usually all you have to do is hit the windows key and the first letter of the program's name and its there. people would rather navigate the tree like structure in the start menu of Windows 7 cause they're familiar with it.

So it's better than Windows 7 because you can create a script to bypass the main function of Windows 8 to make it behave like Windows 7?

Gotcha.

Also, the Windows 7 search > the Windows 8 search. Windows 7 would index all your apps, files, and settings and the search would return the results but for some reason MS thought Windows 8 would be better to separate those items. :manny: They've fixed this in 8.1 though the search is much more powerful.

For the record, I'm not saying Win 8 is bad, it's just a lot of unnecessary crap on top of an otherwise good OS. The world basically wasn't ready for Metro, and them gimping the desktop interface was a step in the wrong direction. Seems like they've corrected pretty much all that with the new version though.

I've put a lot of time and effort into my current windows 7 build. I feel like I can wait for the next iteration of windows still.

Although, I would like to get my hands on a couple of those apps and that new version of explorer just to see the difference. Not a real big fan of the ribbon though. Live tiles would kinda be nice though but considering how little I look at my start menu or desktop would be pointless. I currently have a bunch of live tiles in my new tab page for chrome though.

And I read, there are ads in search results? I've never had much love for windows search. I'm currently using Everything in place of windows search and swear by it.

no the script is simply used to boot to desktop. Windows 8 is essentially when you ignore the metro side the updated version of Windows 7. some of the main points people are talking about in this update are just bullshyt like the start button. you hit the start button and its just bringing up the start screen. you do that in Windows 8 right now except there's not a dedicated button for it you just hover your mouse over the bottom corner of the screen.

much of what this update is doing isn't reinventing the wheel. its still the same Windows 8 we already had with minor additions. some of the stuff you had to manually do (my script to boot to desktop) is done automatically for you now.

Windows 8 still searches your files you just click on files for the results of that. it has programs, settings, files in three different categories. why should they all be in the same pool of search results its just more stuff to look through.

Because like if I wanna search for a song, I just wanna hit start and start typing the song name. With Windows 8, I have to hit start, start typing the song name, then go over and click on "files" instead of apps and then choose it. I mean I don't really have any apps that come up when I type "Tupac" so the extra click is just nebulous for me I prefer to have it all in one search.
