With Chris Culliver lost for the season to a torn ACL, there’s an opportunity for other cornerbacks to earn more playing time in San Francisco.

One of the 49ers vying for those snaps is Nnamdi Asomugha, who signed a one-year deal with no guaranteed money with the 49ers after being released by the Eagles. With no guaranteed money, Asomugha isn’t guaranteed anything else and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said that his play in training camp thus far hasn’t done anything to change that situation.

We really didn’t know what we were getting when we got Nnamdi,” Fangio said, via Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. “He’s had some good days out here and some days when we weren’t sure if he’d be able to still have it. I think we’re kind of in between on him right now. Hopefully, he’ll still be able to have some gas left in his tank to go out there and play like he did prior to going to Philadelphia. So I think the jury is still out there.”

With the 49ers reportedly back in contact with Eric Wright, the depth chart could get even more crowded at cornerback in the coming days. Based on Fangio’s comments, it doesn’t sound like that would be a good thing for Asomugha’s chances of sticking with the 49ers unless the team starts seeing good days more consistently.

How is it possible that a guy who was once considered a no. 1 or 1a cornerback in the league is clawing to even make a roster...and even worse, he could get knocked off by a guy that left the Lions and immediately got cut? :patrice:

How can you explain this fall from grace? :patrice:

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
he spent most of his career with the raiders.. all they did was lose. a lot of shyt with him was perception as well. His BEST year statistically the raiders went 2-14. He only has 15 career INT's and they can say whatever they want about teams not throwing to him.. that's bullshyt. Those Raiders teams sucked.

He was probably just always an average corner, in a weak division (previously), on a horrible team. His talent level got inflated.

The Niners are a physical team, and if you play with them (especially defense), you're expected to perform at a level that is on par with the rest of your squad.
Nnamdi tried to play physical, and got hurt.

He's more of a finesse player, except that he's lost the tangible qualities that make him that sort of player.

honestly I wouldnt have minded keeping him for insurance purposes. I dont have that much trust in brock or wright. we're an injury away from serious problems at this point imo.
