I still don't know what Jay was thinking when he went @ Nas. Many might've felt Nas had fallen off, but Jay had given Nas too much material. Yeah he may have had Carmen and left the condom on the baby seat, but by that point, he'd:

1) Sampled Nas's voice on numerous occasions (and even dropped a line about it in the diss record)

2) Said Biggie, Nas, and himself were argued as the best.

3) Referenced Nas or Nas's music on several other occasions

^^^ So he essentially came off as a stan during the whole battle. Him being with Carmen just made it creepy, like he did it to really have more in common with Nas. That being said, I could see Jay with the face when the line dropped, then transforming to this , then this , then this, then this then this, then this , then this then this and finally .

Whle I do think Nas 'won' that battle, let's be real-Ether hasn't aged that well. Takeover was a better diss overall, but he tried to kill Nas with one verse and that obviously wasn't going to work. he should have made Takeover completely about Nas like he did Blueprint 2, but Nas had won by that point. Pretty much we're always going to think the comeback record is better because it's the response record and the last thing we remember essentially. But the talk about this battle is never going to go away, unfortunately.

Yeah, but they had being going at each other for awhile, so you might as well call some names. Plus after that Stillmatic freestyle, Jay had to do something because the beef got brought to the forefront.

I remember when people was first hearing Takeover and trying to write Nas off and I was like 'Wait till he respond' and that nikka set the streets on fire with that shyt. Still, Ether doesn't sound that great today, especially in comparison to Takeover and I'm not a fan of Jay like that.

I think that takeover beat is dope, especially how he said it up with the 'Lame' chant. I just think people are more caught up in the nostalgia with Ether instead of the actual track. Like I can't remember where I was at when I first heard Ether, but I remember exactly where I was at when I heard Takeover though. Both great tracks IMO though.
