I always took it as rapping something that tries to be complex but on closer examination falls flat on its face...basically trying way too hard to be "lyrical" and/or needlessly complex. You can be simple and have a great depth of subject matter

Nah I didn't because I've heard dudes using it to describe rappers like Cole who do emot and tell stories in their music and I was confused.
