i listened to mostly punk rock and hardcore for like 10 years, until I realized it's a self defeating genre. a lot of the music within that genre, the lyrics were REALLY negative (self hate, world hate, suicidal thoughts, etc etc) I connected with it, but it also continued to keep me in that dark place mentally that I loathed just because it felt nice to have something to "connect" with

The bolded is interesting to me. I listen to (and grew up on) mostly rap and punk (some late 80s-early 90s alternative/indie pop), but neither has ever left me in a dark place.

It could be because I sort of came back to hardcore/punk (mostly the stuff from before my time) years later.

I guess the point I'm making is this -- I believe music can take you out of a dark place (because you want it to), but I don't believe music can put you in/keep you in a dark place. But, this is just my experience, so I could be completely wrong.

Its the ultimate form of music.

Alot of it comes from the fact that hip hop was formed off of sampling other genres and adding our own twist to it.

That's what I get from hip-hop...it's all of the musics in one.

Even if i'm listening to other genres of music, I can hear something for a second that will give me an idea for a rap song.

I'm not a KRS-ass nicca, but you can take literally anything and make it funky in hip-hop. It's like life - some things can be one way, but you can work it into something you can deal with.

Smooth jazz makes me relax and makes me feel cool. Also makes me think. Like, I can see the title of a song and see how the artist tries to paint the picture of the thing in the title.
