there were quite a few factors that people already touched on, but he didn't have a completely wasted career though. In fact his discog is pretty solid.

The Sugar Hill single went gold or platinum and Doe or Die may have gone gold but his label folded right before the 2nd album came out which delayed it by about a year and when it came out it had no promotion so it flopped. After that he signed to Motown and they didnt really promote him either. IMO he has one of the best catalogs in hip hop but never got the right push. If he would of signed to def jam his career may have been totally different. He could of signed to any label he wanted after life's a bytch, from what I heard there was a major bidding war
yea, I remember him saying how he almost signed to Bad Boy.

Good thing that aint happen, cuz he woulda been fukked.

Then again, could you imagine AZ & Biggie doing tracks together? :whew:

AZ is my favorite mc period, but from day one, you could tell his style was never gonna blow up, in a major.

Dude is a rapper's rapper, he's for the connoisseurs of this music, dude only knows how to do Hip-Hop one way, and that's bringing first class lyricism. Not every artist is suppose to be mainstream, and i'm glad, he's stayed true to his style.

But the one problem, he has had since Doe or Die, is beat selection

I definitely dont think his verse on LaB is overrated. That shyt ushered in a new era of dope lyricism with him and Nas.

My opinion is always that in entertainment and sports to a degree, a few things can go your way OR not and the could be the difference in your success. I truly believe with the failure of the Firm, the album delay's and bad choice of labels changed the course of his career. I think instead of Nas really reaching back to help him, he distanced himself from the whole Firm fiasco, because it nearly derailed his career. All in all, I think AZ is doing alright though financially. Also, while I do think he couldve had a higher ceiling as far as popularity...but his style wasnt meant to sustain a long mainstream run.

plus IRS and baby moms been eatin away at his stash too. not saying you rich cuz you pushin a particular ride....but nikkas always say Mega's whip game is better than Nas. Nas could be cashing bigger checks than most but how much of it is putting out or losing?

And not ever great rapper is meant to blow up. They arent always simultaneous.

To me the GOAT is Kool G Rap, and he was far from a superstar
