PlayStation Brings on Rackspace Talent to Help With “OpenStack Private Cloud Deployment”

The ‘power of the cloud’ has been quoted numerous times by both Microsoft and Sony as we get closer to the launch of the Xbox One and PS4. Much of the debate has focused on Microsoft’s assertion that the cloud will make the Xbox One noticeably more powerful, but many have disputed it, while Sony has said that it is possible, but limited. Meanwhile, other important cloud features include Microsoft’s cheap dedicated servers for developers – which we want on PS4 – cloud saves, and, of course, Sony’s Gaikai cloud game streaming.

So, as you can see, ‘the cloud’ will be very important next gen, which is why today’s news that PSLS has uncovered is so interesting.

Rackspace – the open cloud company that recently announced plans to partner with CERN on cloud computing – will be helping Sony out with their PlayStation cloud plans.

Lanham Napier, CEO of Rackspace, said in an earnings call (transcribed by SeekingAlpha) that Sony is now an “enterprise customer” for the company, continuing:
"Sony PlayStation recently signed a services agreement with Rackspace, under which our developers and architects will be consulting and supporting the PlayStation team with their OpenStack private cloud deployment."

Elsewhere he said:
"We are the Founder and a key leader of the OpenStack cloud ecosystem, and we are the leader in providing OpenStack-based private clouds."

OpenStack is a cloud computing project to “provide an infrastructure as a service”, jointly created by Rackspace and NASA, with it’s website saying:
"OpenStack is a global collaboration of developers and cloud computing technologists producing the ubiquitous open source cloud computing platform for public and private clouds. The project aims to deliver solutions for all types of clouds by being simple to implement, massively scalable, and feature rich."


The scale of Sony’s cloud plans have yet to be seen, but are you excited that Sony is bringing on one of the cloud industry’s best companies to help?

Rackspace to Help Sony PlayStation Deploy OpenStack Private Cloud

Web hosting and cloud hosting provider Rackspace announced Friday in an earnings call it recently signed an agreement with Sony PlayStation in which its “developers and architects will be consulting and supporting the PlayStation team with their OpenStack private cloud deployment.”

The move comes a few weeks after Rackspace launched a free Rackspace Cloud Assessment tool to help businesses decide what their cloud and technology needs to help them effectively migrate to Windows Server 2012.

The partnership comes just months before Sony’s upcoming launch of its heavily-anticipated new gaming system, PS4.

A sufficient and secure cloud network is crucial for PlayStation, especially when considering the April 2011 security breach of the PlayStation servers.

The breach caused a month-long outage of its PlayStation Network, resulting in a loss of revenue of at least $171 million for the company.

Rackspace will be helping Sony with the design and deployment of its PlayStation cloud plans.

In the earnings call, Rackspace CEO Lanham Napier said that Sony is now an “enterprise customer”, but remained otherwise tight-lipped about the partnership’s details.

OpenStack, a project Rackspace jointly created with NASA, is a global collaboration of developers and cloud computing technologists producing an open source cloud computing platform for public and private clouds.

The OpenStack project celebrated its three year anniversary last month.

No it can't. It's a different concept. Sony would need to add thousands of servers to gaikai to even come close to what azure can offer.
But why not? If dude says theoretically, with some r&d, azure can be made to do exactly what gaikai does, then that would mean theoretically gaikai could be made to host multiplayer games with some r&d

Wouldnt that mean gaikai could be used as dedicated servers also?
maybe. look here's the truth, no stanning whats so ever. these companies have enough money to copy off of each others success. right now MS is ahead of the game with the cloud being used to ASSIST multiplayer games. thats a fact. at the same token ps4 is ahead of the game where you can stream games via gaikai. but we already know ps4 actually wasnt ahead of the game. pre xbox about face on the drm stuff. they also had a method where people had libraries of content in the ...cloud somewhere. so everyone could access it. everyone being those on your friends/family list. so its the same thing as what ps4 is doing in that regard.

again no stanning. just going off of what we KNOW. we know the xbox had that feature i just mentioned,(family sharing). so they already have that capability if thats what they desire to do. PS4 has a feature where they can stream games from servers(cloud).

xbox uno - has the cloud acting like dedicated servers to host for multiplayer games. / ps4 isnt doing that..YET.it could happen but it hasnt been announced yet. and if they do it. yes they will be mimicking MS.

we know forza is using the cloud to hold your AI when you're not playing. is PS4 doing that? NOPE, not yet. could they?sure. but if they choose to go that route. they will be once again MIMICKING MS.

You have to understand something MS has been working on that cloud format and even working on assisting these multi player games for awhile now. that means they are more prepared to do something with the cloud to help multiplayer games RIGHT NOW. then sony is..right now.

dont lie to yourself about this. and what will happen with "THE CLOUD" is just like on consoles. it will start off as something really basic. forza is trying something different then everyone else. but the dedicated serves thing is a PC thing. its not new. whats new is having SOLID servers all over the world at the drop of a hat for any developer that can afford to pay MS the leasing cost(which is a helluva lot less then physically buying servers to do it yourself OR paying a bunch of different outside providers. or even someone like amazon or google who doesnt even have a console. so you have to worry do they even understand what needs to be done when it comes to console games flowing over the net.

So in a few years. more developers will realize all the things the CLOUD can be used for. the more they realize they more it will be utilized for more then just a dedicated server.

i'll clue you in on something. because of that cloud. GTA Online. TECHNICALLY doesnt have to make you download a giant DLC pack when they one day choose to add other locations. they can upload those to the CLOUD. and make us pay for an access code so we can unlock them. no spaced used on our console harddrives. no download time. probably less lag when you play GTA online due to the fact the server is running most of the location stuff.

that same GTA online messing with the cloud. could make it so that when we are technically not online. our GTA characters just like forza drivertars could roam the streets of los santos when we're not playing. still making money, still running up on fools. you know playing the way you play the game since it would study your every move and apply it to your GTA character's AI.

in 2k, you ever wonder why when you play online matches vs other people. the CPU controlled layers never move on offense like they do when you playing an offline match vs someone at your house or when you're playing alone. that will no longer be an issue with the CLOUD being the servers. because that AI is in the CLOUD. and not on your console or your opponents console.

again sure it COULD.but how long would it take? R&D takes a long time. making sure you have the infrastructure of servers all over the world. would take a minute. MS is already there.
