I think part of the problem is people get their WWE name in developmental way before they even have a character. Dean Ambrose was Dean Ambrose before he was in The Shield and before he was walking around looking like a sketchy coke dealer. You can't name a guy Repo Man if you gotta pick his name on the first day of school and you dont know what his gimmick will be in 4 years when he gets to the main roster

Came in to the thread to say that you don't necessarily need gimmicks, just good storylines that you commit to.

Thinking about it though... is WWE really capable of good storylines? Maybe they need gimmicks and over the top fukkery to be entertaining cause they'll never really be able to have "good writing"?

I think real names work sometimes like Bret Hart but even Bret Hart had a bunch of monikers the hitman, excellence of execution etc..

If stone cold never existed and a wrestler debuted today as Steve Austin (without the stone cold part) he'd be fukking boring like everyone else. It's the nicknames that make them hard.

Someone like Brock Lesnar doesn't need anything because he's an animal.
