He's not funny without Shawn, he needs a "straight" man.

Every over-the-top situation needs something realistic to ground it. That's why The Wayans Bros. worked so well. Marlon was hilarious on that show, but he was able to play off of strong characters with fully formed personalities like Shawn, Pops, Dee, T.C., and Dupree. At times, he could be the straight man depending on who he was in the scene with. As crazy as Marlon could get on that show, Shawn was always there to slap him up and call him stupid when he couldn't understand something.

I haven't seen any of Marlon's recent work, so I can't judge it, but it sounds like his characters need that person around them to ground them, slap them up and call them stupid when they deserve it.

The two times I've heard him on drink champs, he's funny as fukk.. I'm not a marlon fan AT ALL, but when he's just vibing, drinking, smoking, laughing it up with nikkas... It's like a totally other person. He's not corny, no shtick, he's quick with the jokes, and they come from all over the place. He really shines and shows his intelligence.


Then he does these corny movies and it's all the dumb shyt. I wish he'd play himself more. The best roles of his career is when he's playing a normal type of person who just happens to be funny

I agree which is why his normal acting roles stand out more. I would've liked to see him play Richard Pryor. I think he would've nailed it.
