What has Texas ever done to earn it's "tough, don't mess with Texas" reputation?

The suburbs
In alotta ways yes
In alotta ways no

depends on what stage you are in life and how much you make imo
Does how much you make matter though? Like can we really say something isn't the goat just because most people can't afford it? Like if I wanted basketball lessons from magic Johnson, it's gonna cost more than lessons from my hs gym teacher

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.

That’s a good point because usually these same people who don’t like the places they can’t afford would move to these same places if they had the money.

All the south/Midwest rappers who have cribs in Cali (some east coast cats too)

That's a fair point in theory, but a better analogy would be: "If you pay Magic Johnson 100 dollars he'll teach you how to shoot like Lonzo Ball. If you pay him 10,000 he'll turn you into the next Magic Johnson"

Point being, Magic Johnson (California) is the constant in the analogy. The experience is based on how much you make/pay. You aren't going to a gym teacher, you sitll going to Magic. If they barred broke people from living in Cali, I would agree with your analogy, but they dont.

Alotta people who reside in CA have to pick up extra jobs to afford homes that are the fraction of the size of a Texas home, with a fraction of the land. I have to still count them as CA residents though, they dont get ignored.

btw, I live in Texas and agree that CA is the goat state btw, for many reasons.
My wife and I were considering buying a home there last year.

But If I made way less than I did... I wouldn't want to live there... at all.

People who can’t afford to live in certain areas are too emotional in my opinion. If I ever had to leave my city to move somewhere else for affordability I still wouldn’t shyt on my city.

Then again I teach finance so I understand what’s going on compared to average person who is more impulsive and just sees things and gets angry about it.

If i moved and an opportunity came up where I can move back to my city and live comfortably I’d do it in a heart beat also.

We are in full agreement there.
And that's why I agreed with @BrothaZay overall, even if I didn't think the analogy was 100% accurate.

2006 alot of people were exposed for living in neighborhoods that they couldn't afford. Did that make the neighborhood worse? Not really. But I cant act like they never lived there? You know what I mean?
