Sounds like a cool premise for a movie. In reality if 80% of the population died from a virus it would be a nightmare. The US would be filled with corpses and disease.

Maybe a large portion of Africa is spared. But how do you get there. When you get there, what do you do? Global infrastructures are destroyed, there is no trade, etc

Most of us the states will probably die out from starvation in a couple years. Especially since power and communications will go down.

It would take decades to recover.
