:why: So what if someone said Illmatic was classic the day after release?

They were wrong?

im saying its gonna be sunny tomorrow. if its sunny am i wrong? no, but i got lucky in my accusation. and i live in california, its always sunny.

i doubt people called illmatic classic the day it dropped, but if they did they got lucky. if god forgives, i dont is looked back on 20 years from now as a groundbreaking album than yeah you weren't wrong.

but i highly fukkin doubt it :comeon:

i think I understand and even agree with wut ur saying but ur analogy is pretty flawed and honestly Illmattic was called a classic BEFORE it came out let alone the day of the release. Partly becuuz ppl heard nas and called him the second coming if rakim and Kane and his album was pushed back cuz the original had him with Jesus on the cover.

That said, I find it hard to understand how u can call anything a classic upon its release. U gotta let time pass to fully digest the material and impact. There are some albums I've heard 10 times that on the 11th time I hear it and pick up something new and appreciate it more. (Eg Whut thee album)

An album with superior beats and lyrics. Every track has to be at least decent to the point where while u may not like it the next man may think its the best track on the album. And it has to have replay value. Can't be classic if its not listened to after a week or two.

I am agreeing here, I am just quoting this to point out something about the bolded.

How much "ground" is left to be "broken"?

That's how come there aren't very many "classics" anymore.

Plenty of Albums that people say are classic that don't have superior beats and lyrics

some people may not agree but the only project that might be considered "classic" that was release recently is liveloveasap imo. that may not be "groundbreaking" but when it dropped it had a huuge effect on the hip hop world. hate him or love him he went from "ehh purple swag is cool" to one of the most hyped artists in the game. and even though raider klan and lil b had been experimenting with that old school, melodic, synth heavy sound it hadn't been perfected and made to sound as good as that mixtape.

but i cant see the future so maybe people will retrospectively hate it and call asap rocky on biting raider klans style or say he was a terrible rapper and clams casino carried the tape with his production :yeshrug:

back to the point tho it doesnt have to be necessarily ground breaking but more so just heavily influential to the time.

Somethin that when you talk to actual people, not internet personalities they like almost at a 100% rate... Albums like 7DT, Aquimeni, Doggystyle, Reasonable Doubt, The Cool, Adrenaline Rush....

things that arent classic... albums that you have almost NEVER seen in real life, no one you know has or listens to, all the hype seems to come from media and not real people ie illmatic, gkmc, Wu Tang Forever

not a skippable track. great beats and lyrics. stands the test of time. had an impact

otherwise it's a personal classic or just a good/great album

I dont agree with that aspect. For example on Michael Jackson's Thriller "The Girl Is Mine" is a 100% skippable track for me, yet i still consider the album classic. I dont see how 1 track you dont like on an album with double digit tracks can cause the album to not be a classic.

- edit Damn it i didnt realize this topic was so old.

It will stand out, and you'll know when. There will be albums that are generally revered and they will simply stand tall above all others. The diamonds in the group.

To put a serious thought into it, the only album that I think can stand the case for becoming close to a universally accepted hip-hop classic is The Chronic. Putting all the deemed great albums together and trying to make the case for just one to be THE hip-hop album, I think it edges out all others in potential.

Not saying the others can't make it, but I believe The Chronic has the best chance.
