this is a great post because it illustrates how masculinity works, it's something to be performed.

Males perform masculinity.

Nothing. Black men are only hypermasculine because other races are so feminine in comparison, like black men are considered so athletic because other races can't compete. The term means a bunch of nothing.

cool, so what is the definition of masculinity with the context of those parameters?

In the context of an African American male in 2016 that definition could vary depending on who you ask. IMO the general consensus is a heterosexual male who is athletic, stoic, emotionally detached, tactful, driven, with a certain degree of ego and narcissism....

Is that "toxic"..... I don't know. That's more of a value judgement

"toxic" masculinity is just masculinity as seen through the eyes of new wave feminism/ modern day society.

But don't worry they are fixing it.

A lot of schools did away with recess. Too violent.

Took away dodgeball in schools. Too violent.

Can't sit still in class? ADHD, here are some pills to keep you quiet.

Misplaced emotions? Play some video games.

Young boys don't have many positive ways to grow into their role as Men anymore.

We've gone too far in the opposite direction but :yeshrug:

I got my sources from two women who wrote two excellent books on the subject.

Hip-hop/rap has been mentioned multiple times already in the first few posts. Hip-hop is literally the biggest representation of the black male image GLOBALLY.

In actuality, black masculinity is no different than any other race, but because of hiphop culture we're viewed as more violent, aggressive, materialistic, hypersexual, and less responsible/intelligent than all other races.
Is that why? Hip Hop? Really?

Like black men weren't viewed as more violent more aggressive, materialistic, hypersexual and less reponsible BEFORE Hip Hop culture.

This was an ideation created by someone else no?

frfr...... The Birth of a Nation depicted us as savages before Fredo was in the cut

White propaganda through various media sources has been tarnishing the image of black men long before Hip Hop.
