They're gonna have to stop being trash first
they are already pretty successful, what do u mean blow up? ariana grande feature?
They are underground and want to stay that way
And if u listen to their music it's pretty obvious why they haven't "blown" up

They're rapping but they don't have the much in the way of a traditional hip-hop aesthetic. They go out of their way to promote very cult-like imagery and ideals, why would you think the masses would gravitate to that?
They aren't the flyest, slickest talking, the most popular, the most hood... they don't present themselves as the illest spitters in million mile radius, etc etc
Most people that do blow up in hip-hop fit into those categories. Even if you look at Joey Badass, he presents himself as "one of the cool kids" and he believes he's the craziest spitter on Earth.
ASAP Rocky thinks he's the flyest dude on Earth.
Young MA presents herself as very popular, very hood, very bold.
Desiigner is the life of the party, and also thinks he's the illest spitter.
Kendrick wears flows like new clothes.... he rhymes as if what he's saying is the most amazing thing you'll ever hear in this lifetime.
, so they have some kinda mass appeal I imagined. You made some great points. Maybe The Underachievers are too abstract for the masses that they won't gravitate to them.
At the same time they're most popular song Herb Shuttles has over 20 million views on youtube, so they have some kinda mass appeal I imagined.
I can't even say that they're weirdos....They just preach a different philosophy than most rappers. Theres way more rappers thats poppin that are more stranger/out there than these guys but I digress.
Steez was fukking nice....Yeah. They were getting a lot of blog hype when Herb Shuttles & Gold Soul Theory dropped, truthfully that's when I got up on them. That whole Beast Coast wave was popping on the hip-hop blog sites (Pro Era/Flatbush Zombies/Underachievers).
But I can imagine every meeting they took with a major label, they were getting asked to dumb it down so their style and sound can be commodified. No coincidence that their "weed" song is their biggest song, but I doubt they had any interest in making albums full of stoner rap. They seem like some "wake up and create some ill shyt" type of dudes, I respect that alot.
Dumbing down wasn't a problem for Joey Badass, because (no shots) Joey is pretty basic, all the way down to his image. That's why he got hot before Steez, even though I feel like Steez was nicer than him.
